When I had my lesson a week last friday my instructer felt he was slightly tight on this off hind pn the right rein, and fron canter to trot he fell into his transition.I had the back lady out last wednesday who said that his muscles were indeed very tight on his right quarter and set upon freeing them up.She said to walk for no more than 30 mins the day after the treatment and again the following day.The 3rd day I could introduce the trot which I did.

Today being the 6th day I went into the school and tried canter on the right rein he wouldn't go off on the correct leg and finally I managed it but it fely awful, he was so disunited
at the rear and clearly wasn't happy.I stopped cooled him down and went into panic mode.

I rang my instructer as to what to do , ie get the back lady up or get the vet, she said that she would like to see him being lunged tomorrow , I then phoned the back lady who said that sometimes it kind of sicological (sp)-( I'm too stressed to spell correctly!)and they think that it is going to be un comfortable and react to this,as she thought he had been tight for sometime, he has never been lame .

My question is if your still reading this is, is it worth getting the vets out, are they any good with backs?I have penciled in a visit from said back lady for monday and need to phone her once I have lunged tomorrow.

Has any one experienced this before?

I just want him sorting out.

Thanks in advance

Personally would get the vet. It's very easy to spend a lot of time and money trying different therapists etc only to find that the problem is something entirely different or that can't be manipulated or massaged better. Providing you have a really good horse vet I would start with them.

Personally I would wait before getting the vet as he is not lame, and that's another bill, and then you will have three people giving you advice and they might all conflict!

So let your instructor see him being lunged, and then see what the back lady says Monday, and if what they both say is similar, then you can work on their advice. If they say different things, ie instructor thinks it is one thing and back lady thinks it is psychological (?sp?) then call vet!

I would she what he's like on lunge tomorrow and if still not right I'd get the vet

It may be something un-related to his back.

If i were you i wouldn't get back person out again. It sounds as though she made him worse..... I've had experience of back people supposedly "Fixing" my horses only for them to take weeks to actually come right afterwards. Sometimes they can hurt the horses muscles if they are too rough or pull things in the wrong direction. Some do good but others just don't know what they're doing.... (i'm sure lots of people will disagree here!) Alot of the time the horse can work through this stiffness if you try and ride long and low for a few days. If there is then still no improvement call vet out and have him fully checked over.

Some vets believe that horses can never have pain in their backs (like some doctors who've obviously never had a backache!!) Others are great and may be able to recommend some treatment or physio or similar if they know what is causing the problem.

If I were you I would call the cancel the back lady and call the vet. All these therapists are fine im sure but none of them have training the same way a vet does. By all means let your instructor see him lunged, and maybe give him a day or two off....

I have seen a fair few horses develop more serious problems through "back people" doing more harm than good.... which is just my opinion, im not saying your back person is bad!

For insurance purposes I would certainly get the Vet out as a back person regardless of qualifications is not allowed to diagnose a problem, they have to contact your Vet to ask permission to treat a problem that should have been diagnosed by a qualified Vet MRCVS first, this is a technicality that the insurance companies know and use to get out of paying if you have contacted a back person before your Vet... beware!

DaisyD - sorry if you know this already but seeing your horsey-o lunged without a saddle/rider will help your instructor to tell if it is a problem all the time or only under saddle so I'd certainly cancel the back lady, book the lunge lesson and prepare for maybe getting the vet out. Fingers crossed.
