I have owned horses for nearly 30 years but previously always kept them at home. Booked us onto a livery yard for the first time ever yesterday and now I'm petrified :o I've read loads of horror stories on here but have had only good reports about the yard I've booked us onto, I just hope they are all friendly and Vinnie behaves himself :o

We move 5th May...excited but actually really nervous now too - reassure me we'll be fine!! :D

Hey, welcome to my situation from 3 years ago. I was sick at the prospect, but 3 years on I can say it's great. I particularly love not having to store and worry about sourcing hay and bedding myself anymore! It's also about the only place I get to socialise with people on my wavelength and it's so nice having other people to ride out with and help out during during hols, sickness, etc. As long as you're approachable and cheerful, you'll be fine!

Good luck for the 5th :)

Hey good luck :)
Once you find the right yard it can be great being a livery (although I would love my own place.)
I've been on a few horrible yards but am very happy now

I'm sure you will be fine. I own my own yard now and have liveries. But at times I really do miss being on a livery yard where I only have my own horses to worry about and lots of company from people with the equivalent or more experience than myself. Being the YO and also the most experienced here is sometimes alittle exhausting. Also I never get to go away, even for as much as one night as I have no one I can rely on to take care of everything and not get themselves hurt! Good luck with your new venture. I'm sure you will not regret it.

I think you'll really enjoy it. I always had two horses as I kept them at home. When I lost both of them within a week of each other, I decided I would just get one and put him in livery.
I love it, always someone to ride with, no worries about getting rid of the muck pile, lots of good company for my boy.
I may well bring him home one day, but for the time being we are really happy, good luck.

it's great if you have the right yard. There are people to ride with and have a good natter about horses with. The maintenance of the yard isn't your problem so if something needs fixing you don't have to worry, and the muck heap is someone else's problem.

Fab! :D

I used to be on a yard with just one other person which for a while was lovely but for various reasons (mainly horses health) I moved onto a livery yard and it was the best thing I ever did....

My horse now has more horses to be social with, he is much happier and so am I! I have so much more time to spend with my horse in terms of riding, grooming etc and having others to ride out with. Its a lot more social and I really enjoy being on there.....

I hope all goes well on the 5th!

The social aspect and back up you get from being on a yard is a plus. Also not having the worry of hay deliveries, mucking out etc etc. I'm sure everything will be fine. Enjoy!

I love my livery yard - even I could have him at home I don't think I would. The people and horses are lovely, he gets the best of care and pasture pals, everyone is experienced and the YO really cares about your progress and goals as a rider. She establishes a calm, friendly atmosphere, and is also a brilliant teacher, which is a great plus. If you've chosen the right one, you'll be fine and possibly happier! People love to tell horror stories - not that they aren't true, but they don't generally reflect the norm. Enjoy the increased opportunities for doing horsey things with like-minded people! Good luck settling in.

I have always had them at home and from February this year we took the plunge and went into livery!

I have to say it's the best move we have ever made! Last year I competed 3 times, since being there 2 months I have done that already!

I have been able to try xc which I would never have been able to do before at home and J loves it!

I have been able to school properly in a lovely arena and jump not on a sloping field!

I love the ease of comps when they are held at the yard too :) I am not as bored as I was at home either and my horse is much happier

Good luck :D

Oh thanks guys, its great to here that there are good yards too! The social aspect I am really looking forward to - it was boring hacking out on my own all the time in Spain, plus I don't know anyone my own age group over here yet so that will be great. And having an arena...and mini competitions...ooh its quite exciting!

I love my livery yard and as someone else said even if I could have my horse at home I wouldn't. The yard managers are lovely and have become 2 of my best friends and all the other liveries without exception are great and we are all very like minded. It is so lovely that my loan horse's owners after coming down to visit started coming down and riding one of the YMs horses every week and have now taken another horse on loan down there! They were having a break from horses after being on a very competitive yard and the fun went out of it but now they love it again after hanging out down our yard. Luckily for them Max isn't capable of doing the level of eventing they want so they are selling him to me to give them a slush fund for loan horsey :)

Hi - I did the same 18 months ago after 6 years of keeping my mare in a field!

I really enjoyed the first yard (even with the occasional idiot) but it didn't suit my mare so I had to move after 6 months...I LOVE my new yard...you would have to remove me kicking and screaming, people are lovely. YO's are exceptional and nothing is too much trouble.

Try not to be nervous...you are right some places are not great but then there are many yards out there that are fab and if you meet some nice people you will find that you have support anyway.

Good luck

i was the same- and its fantastic not having to worry about ordering haylage etc ,i ride now nearly every day whereas before i was fixing stuff and worrying about when to harrow and roll and ragwort, paddock maintainance etc. now i just ride! :)
