Loki's a lightweight cob standing 15hh and he could carry 14st (according to the show cob webpage). Now I know the weight limit is including tack but I was wondering if my friend who used to ride and weighs 14st could have a sit on him and a wee wander up and down the track just at walk or would this be too much for my boy?

I'm absolutely no expert on this topic (and there are a fair number on HHO who are - do a thread search!) but I would not let a person who says they are that weight, before you factor in the weight of the tack, even sit on a horse such as you describe.
Sorry if this is not the answer you wanted, but I believe that to do so would compromise the horse's overall welfare.

He'll be absolutely fine.
For one offs for a wander, they can carry a fair amount more.
There is a wee 11.2hh section A I know that the kids used to jump on, 2 at a time so they'd have been about 14 stone also, the wee sod could still tank off with them, he's 30+ now and still full of it so it never did him any harm.

EEP two different answers :eek::D

Burmilla,
Don't worry about it I'd actually already said he was a little too heavy for my lad but then I second guessed myself and thought "maybe it'd be ok for a wee pootle up and down the track" :o Also this \/ (where is the down arrow?!)

Welshie Squisher,
It would have literally just been him being led at walk up and down the little track next to the field. It's been years since he's ridden so I'd not be comfortable letting him have control even with my boy being such a dope on a rope and what with the weight issue if I did let him on he wouldn't be going faster than a walk :)

Any more for any more? see if I can get a generall consensus ;)

You will get a wide varying opinion on this sandi, it's a debate thats raged on for years on H+H.
I got a right running for saying no one of 20 stone or over should be on a horse, others thought 12 stone! Then you have the 8 1/2 stone rider who asks if they are too heavy for their 17hh horse, and the 19 stone rider on there 44kg 14hh pony.
You just wont get one answer I'm afraid.

You know your horse better than anyone, what does your gut instinct tell you?

Oops I meant 19 stone on a 400kg pony.

Ha ha! I was gonna say ;):D

Well tbh like I said, I initially thought ah too heavy but then I thought that it shouldn't be a problem for a two minute sit on.
My old YO actually had someone about that weight (heavier by the looks of the person) on him once - I wasn't best pleased when I found out as it was an hour lesson of fairly hard work! We're not there anymore so don't anyone panic! ;):D
I think he'd be ok for what I have in mind but obviously I'd have to see how my friend rides, if he's gonna thump down on his back when he gets on or if Loki looks strained or uncomfortable in anyway he'd be getting off quick sharp! I think I might give it a go... *ducks head for fear of a smack*

Depends on fitness etc too. You know your horse best. I'm 8 stone 10 & my 16hh WB (quite muscular built) can carry my OH who is about 14 stone however I wouldn't expect her to carry him for long periods of time (ie. hunting) I'm sure she would probably be fine but reckon she's used to having me on her back :D

I think Loki would be fine for your friend to pootle on down the road with. He has plenty of bone and looks pretty fit.

For sitting on a horse for two minutes I would say you are 100% fine IMO. It shouldnt cause any lasting damage. It would be a different kettle of fish if you said that this person wanted to ride your horse round a 3 mile XC course!

Tallyho,
That was actually him last summer  He's been out of work for a month because of my torn back ligaments but my friend won't be coming for a while so now I'm feeling better I should have time to get him back into work before he and his family come for cuddles (with the horse not me ;)) :)

Maria13,
Ha ha he'd fall off! He hasn't ridden in years :D
