Hi there, what would you do with an 11yr old welsh x 14.3hh but never sound!! i have had him for 4years and he has always suffered with lameness in his front feet on and off,the last couple of weeks he has felt stiff when being ridden but this time from behind, when i got back from being out on him the day he got down to roll but struggled to get back up and was almost dragging his hind feet,he was better later in the day but not bringing his hind legs under him properly.his back has been checked and is fine, any ideas?!!

Vet yes, but you could try the alternative route too. Magnets, Devils Claw feed supplement, possible physio visit and out of stable as much as possible even if it's handwalking - if the vet agrees that is. There is no scientific evidence to support the use of magnets but you can't do any harm with them. That is expensive though. My old mare had regular EMRT Equine muscle release technique treatments (Bowen for horses). That worked a treat for her stiffness and lameness issues.

You need a diagnosis before you can decide a treatment. I would get the vet out anyway asap even if he seems better on monday. Struggling to get up and dragging hind legs is not good

sorry have not read other replies but I would get the vet to check. Stiff hind legs could be a sign of tying up - or anything really, you want to get that checked

i'd be tempted to have x-rays to check he hasn't got any major problems. And if not just little and often work wise. my 10 year old gets really stiff if not worked little and often as he's got quite a few injuries.

I guess just see what the vet says. Might take a bit to find out whats wrong but at least you'll then know.

Best of luck. let us know what vet says. x

I would call the vet but can also recommend magnet boots, we have had excellent results with them. They will do no harm even if they don't work so you can use them while waiting for the vet. I rang our local Bio-flow agent one day and he brought some up that evening, so we could use them straightaway which was a good job as we were looking at pts if we didn't find something that worked.
