:confused:I am so glad I dont know any of you in the flesh as I really need to ask a stupid question.

Ok here goes, please be patient with me!

I have a sloughi (rescued) who has been crate trained in the past, my mother and I are going away in a few weeks to my sisters and she has an open plan house and so we are thinking of getting him a crate for him to go in. We want to get it now so we can get him used to it again. He will be spending all night in there when at my sisters so we are building up to that. So my really thick question is, do you just put a water bowl in the crate at night or do you need to invest in some sort of water feeder type thing so that he can not spill it?

Also any tips of reintroducing the crate?

Thank you and sorry for the thick question, I have never used a crate before.

Henry doesn't have water in his crate at night, although you can get bowls that attach to the bars if you like **prepares to be flamed for being an evil owner:p**

Re introducing the crate - I got Henry to run in and out a couple of time, then got him used to being shut in - he was in it overnight right from the start and accepted it fine.

Cayla is the crate training queen though, if you want to be more scientific!

Chlo doesnt have water in her crate at night. *Beats spudlet for being a pants owner and prepares to be beaten back*

No water in mine ever! all my water is kept in a bucket on the patio, my dogs are in and out all through the day, so they get the chance to drink frequently, they also go to bed late and I let them out early so they will not dehydrate to death over night:D
So either leave water bowl out or leave it on and place it in the corner or get a bowl that clips onto the crate itself.

Chlo did start off with water in her crate, but she just drank it all/spilt it everywhere, and then weed on her bed. So we stopped! Shes none the worse for it.

I have a bowl that attaches to the door but not everyone needs it.

My dog doesn't drink enough during the day so he has that at night but rarely drinks from it.

Evie doesn't have water in her crate. She can make enough mess paddling in her water bowl in the kitchen, gawd knows what she would do with it in a crate.:p

If he's a bit clumsy and messes alot with stuff, I'd keep the water out.... but otherwise keep it in :) mainly because I can often here my dog slurping away during the night so wouldn't feel comfortable not giving him any, but every dog is different!
Also to reintroduce, I'd have the crate open and give him his food in it, some chews, and when leaving him at night in it possibly put his dinner in a kong (mainly useful with wet food ;) ) and give it to him to help him settle.

Thank you for all of your replies, I think I will go with leaving the water out especially as he will only be in there for about 6 hours overnight. Your input is much appreciated. :)

Over here you can buy water bottles that they lick to get the water and that clip onto the side of the crate that are like giant versions of the ones you have for hamsters ... When we used to crates ours we used them and they worked really well as they can't spill the water. They aren't terribly expensive either - around $20 or so. Maybe you can get something similar in the UK? I never crated my dogs when I still lived there ...
