My mare hates travel boots, but I don't like her not having them on, especially on long journeys. I was wondering whether anyone could suggest some very soft ones for her, as it seems to be the lack of movement she finds worrying (I have the Mark Todd ones for my other mare)

Thanks,

Rebecca x

Not too sure... but usually travel her in boots (stretch and flex exercise ones) and then travel boots over the top. She is a bit funny with bandages at the best of time

Our coloured mare (TBx) hated all travel boots too and would kick about so hard that I thought she'd damage herself more with them than without them.

The previous owner had never used them. I guess your idea of the softer ones would be best, or bandaging with gamgee.

I used to have the Polly Products ones - v similar to poly pads ones. They were great on my mare - never moved or slipped and were soft.

I love the MT ones but they don't fit my awkward b*gger of a mare so I ended up with other rigid ones but I sometimes wish I'd stuck with the Polly's - I just coveted the MT's!

If I'm only doing a short trip, I sometimes use just brushing boots anyway and they've done a decent job but then horse hasn't done anything silly...

The alternative I guess would be brushing boots, overreach boots, hock and knee boots but thats an awful lot of straps to fasten!

As a compromise with my mare, I now use my Equilibrium stable leg wraps as travel boots. They don't cover her knees or hocks, but do cover down to the coronet band, so give her some protection if she were to tread on herself.
She travels well, so am not too worried about the lack of full leg protection, and as she is happy to wear these, I feel its better than wearing nothing at all! I know its not the perfect solution, but its worked for me.

I used to use the poly pads ones but the velcro was pretty well worn on them so they fell down a lot

I then started to use Thermatex leg wraps and dropped them down around his hoof- not a huge amount of protection but fine for just going 20 miles or so which is all I usually do. I also got Thermatex travel boots for him which are soft and properly shaped and he likes them best/I like them best

Thermatex Travel Boots

I have a set of Nag Rags travel boots which I have had for about 10 years, they are the tomb stone shaped ones and quite soft. Find they fit most horses and they don't seem to mind them. Not sure if you can still get them, only downside is colour, navy, lime green and purple.

My mare hated the fitted / rigid type travel boots too. Used to think she would go through the lorry with all the protesting she did with them on. Went without for a bit (well brushing boots) then tried her in the polly ones and bingo - no probs!!

I used the shaped gamgee (shaped like a travel boot but made of gamgee) and bandages for one of my horses that didn't like rigid boots, also used over reach boots all round. Although doing it this way takes a while to do, I do feel it offers good protection.

Also used Thermatex leg wraps with knee and hock boots and over reach boots. Which is a little bit quicker than bandages.

I think they're the ones I have, had them for at least 10years aswell, used them on several horses and they're still pretty good but I have looked after them well. As Pinkwellies2 said, not sure if they make them anymore as havnt seen any around for ages.
