I moved my horse a little while ago to a new yard as I'm starting a new job soon doing shifts so he needs to be on full livery to keep him in a routine. I still planned to see him every day. The yard is 30mins away, but it's absolutely fantastic so worth the travel. Unfortunately the horse just hasn't settled and to top it all off I am pregnant and my morning sickness is just getting worse and worse. Because of this I've been going up only once or twice a week - the drive is just not practical if I need to throw up!

So I've had a word with my lovely yard owner and I've decided it's best if I leave and find somewhere closer to home - horse is just not settling at all with such a change of routine and not seeing me and beong ridden. If the situation was different and I could get there most evenings I'd give it more time.

I've been looking for new yards close to home. The yard I came from was 5 mins away and great, but the grazing was very bad and with a poor doer this is my priority. I need a yard that'll do full livery and I've found lots of part livery or DIY yards, but few full livery yards. The ones I have found are full or don't have a flood lit school (essentail for me in winter) or I just wouldn't trust with my horse!

I have found one yard that is -
full of very friendly people
has good grazing
a large stable
flood lit school
very good price
owner who is very flexible

But - the owner is non horsey and doesn't have a clue about horses although I can see he would try his best. The situation is apparently that the wife ran the yard, but they have split up and she has left along with the groom. He is getting a new groom in soon to do the work and as the yard is only small I don't see it being a huge problem.

So not really sure what to do! The reason I ask for help from Kent people is that I could do with some yard recommendations in and around maidstone please!

Sorry for rambling on, but I hate being apart form my horse!

Thanks, I'd rather hang on for a good yard as I trust YO at his current yard to treat him like a prince and do everything he needs and more. But I hate not seeing him

where about was the yard you looked at? are you looking for a yard to exercise the horse as well?

No I don't want him exercised. Just everything else.

New yard is near hollingbourne. Not to sure about it so think I'll go with my gut feelings.

I'm in Bredhurst Kent and can't think of any full livery yards in Maidstone! l could ask a few people I know in the area for you though?!

Hi Zoon,

Wish i could help, but i can't, as i'm miles away in NW - but just a thought -
as you're pregnant, do you have any plans for your horse once you've got a baby demanding 24/7?

I'm just thinking alternatives, maybe loaning him out for a couple of years (horse, not baby!!), while you have your hands full? A good friend of mine has done exactly that, after she gave up trying to cope! And it's working well

Good luck, anyway, + remember, there's always someone who can help you out! Hope all goes well, BS x

Im in tunbridge wells i can look into a few for you and ask around. If it was tunbridge wells area i know of a few! i;; keep you posted hun

Think i might just give horse a well deserved rest. I'd consider a sharer but he's a "unique" ride to put it nicely so not sure I'd have any takers!

have a huge hug, it can't be easy when he is so unsettled. I would be wary of the NH guy with no groom. It would be fine if he finds a new groom and they stay with him but what happens if they then leave without notice, which is common. He would then be left with your horse not knowing what to do with him

You could try Coldblow farm in nearby Hucking which has excellent facilities and experienced, knowlegable owners and staff. However,i think they only take working liveries, and i don't know how you would feel about this.My daughter recently spent two weeks work experience there, taking her horse.I have to say i amvery impressed with this yard.

I am at a lovely yard between Maidstone and Tonbridge. It's DIY but I have an arrangement with the yard owner where I do things for people ie mucking out, turning in/out etc and they ay me as and when they need me. We have fantastic hacking and a super school but unfortunately no floodlights. Hay is from the people who own the yard as they grow there own so is good quality and reasonably priced and straw is included in the price of your livery. PM me if you want to know more but guess we'll be too far and no floodlights either.

Kits Coty on Bluebell Hill do full livery. Julian Mincher is running the yard now. They also have current vacancies. Large rubber school and decent stables. I have a friend at this yard, and she says that the current staff are very good.

Hi again Zoon (i got one like that also!)

Sounds like friends more local have come up with lots of great info, that's nice. Kent people sound lovely! May i add my best wishes, hope all goes well for you, BS x

Thanks for all your help guys, very kind.

Have decided not to go with the hollingbourne yard, like someone said i'd be completely stuck if the groom left or indeed turns out to be no good!

Went to see my boy tonight as I'm feeling ok today and he had choke! Seem to be having a run of bad luck as he has a swollen knee too!
