What's the difference between a stable rug and a turnout rug?
Other than one is meant to be worn in the stable and the other when turned out?

I was wondering as my boy has loads of thick TO rugs and wanted to use them in the stable during the freezing weather we are expecting rather than buying thick stable rugs.

TO rugs are waterproof, stable rugs generally aren't.

Nothing stopping you putting a TO on in the stable.

A turnout rug is waterproof, and ofter the fabreic had a higher dernier, so is more durable to the rough and tumble of being outdoors! So long as the turnout fits well there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to use it indoors, but for obvious you wouldn't want to use a stable rug outdoors!

I use TO in the stable. easier to clean and sometimes if I have to turn out in morning at 530am its quicker and easier to repostion and turn straight out.

I do use stable rugs too

I tend to keep mine in their turnout rugs so they can go straight out in the morning. My friend turns out for me & I bring in during the winter

I do use stabe rugs, but really what is the point of them?
anyways- note- I find TO rugs warmer when indoors so be aware of this when rugging up.

I rarely use stable rugs - mine stay in their turnout rugs. I don't like bringing the horse in and putting a cold rug onto their back. Also the mare rolls a lot so the stable rug ends up looking disgusting whereas with the turnout rug, the wet doesn't go through. I turn a few out in the mornings and I don't have time to start changing rugs.

Keeping them in their TO rugs also alleviates the problem of getting wet rugs dry for the next morning!

I always change my horses rugs every evening, I think its a false ecomony to use turnouts indoors, waterproof material does not last long when constantly covered in pee and poo, and seeing as I take a turnout off, groom then ride, it is easier to put on a stable rug which is lighter and more comfortable than a TO and as they are both cold after a ride, I would rather put the PJ's on than my jeans to go to bed, I also think that if you leave them in a TO for quickness, many regret it when they don't take the rug off, and discover all manner of nastys under there, fungus, parasites and rubs, nice, not thanks, I am old school and it takes longer, but I have never had to deal with the nastys!

Most turnouts now have some sort of breathable material! I own 1 stable rug which is a lw and i only use it to layer under a TO.

Turnout rugs are the best - have never taken one off at night and put a stable rug on unless they were wet under the rug!
