Currently looking after relatives springer spaniel. She is just over 2 years old, and only 15'' high. The relatives aren't really clued up on the breed, so the dog hasn't/doesn't/isn't used to walks, being off lead, meeting other situations, going in the back of the car.... She is also used to ruling the roost in the home, going where ever she wants, when she wants, on the furniture, on the table, begging, eating out of hand etc.
I know I've got my hands full!!
BUT, given all this, the dog has been very good - considering! (poor thing). She will stay in her bed, learnt not to beg, much, goes off lead and has good enough recall. She loves car journeys, and hasn't stolen anything at home yet. Her on lead behaviour is massively improved too.
I've learnt she is scared of some things, like wheel barrows and gates, so taking our time.

Trouble is, she has an aggressive streak that I can't predict, nor control. I thought at first it was on lead, which I can understand, and while on lead I have more ability to correct unwanted behaviour. She then goes friendly and everything seems peachy. Walk with others, sniff others, do the doggy things.... so let off lead. Play, brilliant. Rest, fine, go seperate ways, ok.... Then like a light switch, she looks over at A dog, and goes... not pleasant. She seems like she is in a trance to wipe out all before her. She has terrified my fathers normal, not-phased-by-anything lab, and only after seeing that have I realised that I'm in out of my depth.
She is ok with my dog, but did have a blip last night where she went for her for no reason other than she didn't want mine to move! My OH says it is play, but clearly she doesn't know how to play as this is in a league of its own. How can you teach an older dog to play??

Any help or advice most welcome.

That's not play. It's a bit like ours, which we've controlled but not managed to eliminate in four years. Shoving a ball in his gob really helps, but he will go for any other dog for no reason, although generally gives fair warning.

Given that nobody can diagnose over the Internet, however, I suggest a really good fun dog trainer to channel her energy into what she's bred for, even if she never actually makes it onto the field given how aggressive she can be.

After talking to some very pleasant dog walkers this evening, they have suggested a really good local trainer. I have emailed, as don't want to phone on a sunday, so awaiting some response. I've got about 10 more days with this dog, and am willing to help her out and put my time into her. Watch this space!!

I'm not expecting to cure her. I just want to help, even if it is advice I can pass on to her owners. I also want to learn how to 'manage' when a dog does this.
She is liver and white, not much white on her head, nice evenly marked. She has shown no aggression to anything else that I know about, but wull be nervous around 'strangers' - for about 5 mins, then is convinced all is there to admire her and give her full attention for play or cuddles!

Really don't understand how someone can have a dog and not walk it. Well done for trying to help her. I'm sure they will have a much happier dog on their hands with a few boundaries in place and some manners. She is small for a SS?
It does sound like her energy needs an outlet and her brain a challenge and a lot more socialising.

All who have met her, have been puzzled at her short stature! They equally assume she is a 6 month pup, and when I tell them she is a grown up, they are amazed and shake their heads in disbelief at what life she hasn't seen!!
I'd like to think she is happy here with me, and thanks me for so much fun walks (not with other dogs!?) Her very own adventure holiday!!
