Hi everyone, am stumped with my horse and need some advice. Basically on her right hind on her heel (she has feathers) the hair has started to fall away and yesterday I examined more closely. The whole area is really scabby and flaky. My first thought was mud fever, but she has not been out at all. She has had mud fever on one of her other legs but is all cleared up now (from her last yard when she was out full time) but this problem has only flared up this week. Its white in colour, like just the skin is really dry. It also seems to have different layers to it - really really weird. To touch she doesn't like it but other than that she's not cut, doesn't appear to be lame and doesn't seem that bothered about it. I put some barrier cream on it, and tried to keep the leg as dry as poss. But this has not worked. A friend suggested udder cream to me today do you think this is a good idea? I spoke to my yard owner, she was dismissive and said she was more concerned about her legs being fat and that she thinks she has lymphangitis. Sometimes her legs go a little puffy if stood for a while, which is why I work her on lunge everyday if I don't have time to ride. To me her legs don't look fat - she's normally stocky and that shape anyway. But am panicking now

yeh will ring the vet today me thinks just to put my mind at rest. She gets turned out april full time, at the moment, I have to ride her as much as I can and give her walks and little plays in turnout ring as much as I can because the yard is rubbish for turnout. I have hunted a lot for a yard with more turnout but other than my last yard which I really don't want to return to I can't find anywhere else

they are out full time from april to october and then in from october till april I think. They were supposed to be out in march but my yo said the grass not grown enough and they would just churn it up as ground not dry. To be honest its crap, and am fed up with it as I'm sure Caffrey (my horse) is as well. But really am trying hard to look fro somewhere else but have not been able to find

My horse had something that sounds a bit similar to that, it ppeared after he had had a bit of mud fever and was flacky white scab things but it wasnt sore underneath and he didnt seem bothered by it. i just picked it off bit by bit but he has always been a bit scabby in that area since. probably worth asking vet about though

Try emollient cream - cleared Barons mud fever up in 2 days, also worked on friends horse who had some scabby bald patches on her neck. It for human skin conditions such as dermatitis and also acts as a barrier cream (not a fantastic barrier cream if conditions are very very wet though)

You can get it from chemist or try an internet search.

Don't panic! It sounds as if she has a form of greasey heels which is very similar to mud fever. My mare gets this as she had her feathers clipped off before I had her - now I have let them grow back she is a bit scabby on her white hind leg. I use a brilliant product from www.mudfever.net (they were giving free samples away). No need to wash legs/pick off scabs = just apply the product and rub it in. As for your mare's legs filling - this is probably because she is being kept in.

My horse had a similar thing last year - heavyweight cob with lots of feather which I normally clip off. It turned out to be leg mites. I just had to wash his legs/heels in malaseb liquid which the vet gave me. Cleared up no problem
