Hi. So i'm planning on going away to Uni in september and obviously there's no room in halls for my horse. My mum initially wanted to sell him, but I sort of talked her into loaning.
Now from an outsiders view i'm pretty sure he looks like nothing special- standard ex-racer who can be pretty crazy, still pretty green. But I think everyone of you can identify with being totally in love with your horse, and I think he's the best thing since sliced bread. And I really don't want to part with him. I put up a small ad on one of those free sites about 3 hours ago, and when I got back from the stables I had 5 replies (no idea why, maybe I worded it really well lol). I just burst into tears, its all happening so fast, he could be gone in a few weeks, and now a really unrational side of me just wants to forget uni and stay where I am so I can keep him! But then that could sacrifice his chances in the future. I'd be happier if it were someone I knew taking him, but he's not really a novice ride and I don't think anyone would want him.
Any idea what I should do!?

Could you not take your horse with you to a livery yard near your halls? A lot of my friends did this - beware though it does eat into your social and study time!
Please don't sacrifice your chance for uni; I was heartbroken at having to move away and leave my share horse who I was seeing every day and who was ill when I left (and yeah, by God it does go fast the last few weeks, I spent a full month in tears) but the chance for uni has been the best thing I could have done I've loved every minute and Kelly was still here for me to go back to when I got home.
I'm sure there would be people out there willing to loan him while you are away then maybe share him when you came back? That way he is always still there when you come back but you know you have someone when you are away.

Stop advertising him! You wont have a horse for the summer!

Also, is you mum capable of looking after him if he comes back at the start of the winter?

If not, you really do need to think long and hard about selling him.

Sorry.....

I understand where you're coming from. I advertised mine thinking that no one would want him and that I could say at least I tried!

Try and whittle out the novices and invite a few to come and meet him. Just see it as he's getting all the fuss you'd have given him if you were there. It's short term and if it means he's looked after and paid for then suck it up ;) you're being a good mum by looking out for him. He won't forget you while you're away :)

If you don't want to sell then don't!!!

There are other options: i.e. find a loan home, OR you could consider sending him to equestrian college to be used as a working livery. That way he'd get used in the term time (plus free keep other than half the shoeing and certain vets bills) and you could have him for the holidays all you wanted!

A lot of equestrian colleges will be looking for loan horses for the autumn term; so worth consideration.

Mine was at college for two years and it did him a power of good. PM me if you want to know more.
