Just had a call from the greyhound rescue 3 days after they said they have the perfect dog for me and we had a visit planned for saturday, they wont rehome a dog with me due to my anxiety which will be detremental to the dog aparently even though its not just me in the house!

To say im upset and p*ssed off that my anxiety issues are causing problems with me getting a dog now is an understatement :(:(

To be honest its their loss, they are passing up a good home for dogs they claim are desperate for homes :(

So any rescues that will rehome to me, so far ive had the "no rehoming dogs to flats" "no rehoming dogs with cats" and im sick to death of it!

I got my greyhound from Margaret Green Rescue in Dorset.....I said that i lived in a flat and they said that they prefer to re home to people in flats as you have to take the dog for a walk, you can't just throw it out in the garden.
They are a little far away from you i know but there are places out there that will rehome to you. Your medical issues shouldn't even come into it......You'd help each other, as you'll start to take the dog out for walks etc....

How did they know you had anxiety ? Everyone's anxious at some point about something, seems ridiculous when so many dogs are needing homes.

My mum said as i have anxiety ect im at home alot and not currently at college/work.

Ive rang them back and asked to speak to the manager, shes in tomorrow and ive been given a time to ring her, the woman i spoke to said they assumed panic attacks so you never know i still may have a shot!
I really hope so because if this doesnt work out ive exhausted every rescue i can find online, so i'll have to get a puppy!

No you haven't exhausted every rescue, you've been looking online, for a couple of weeks at most, please don't fall into the 'I need a dog NOW' trap, some people wait months for the right dog, have a bit of patience.

Ive been through ..

Battersea
The dogs trust
RSPCA
Foal farm
Last chance animal rescue
Kent greyhound rescue
Croftview greyhound rescue
Kent lab rescue
And theres another i cant remember the name of .. :o

The only other one in kent a can find is a rotti rescue but i wouldnt have a rottie as my mum is scared of them :(

Im going to give croftview another chance as i said above and if you can reccommend another rescue in my area of course i'll try it. I just get so fed up of ringing rescue after rescue and never finding anything suitable :(
My friend has a litter of JRT puppies, its very tempting but im passing them up in the hope that they change their mind about the greyhound when they realize its not panic attacks i have.
I could have a JRT puppy tomorrow for the same amount i would be paying in donation for a greyhound. But im not ..

Right - try www.grwe.com - they are THE best people for rehoming IMHO. Also tried the Retired Greyhound Trust - if you google greyhound rescue, there will be dozens of organisations come up who you havent mentioned?

I know it is disheartening, and IMHO the rescue place should have the poor little sod PTS rather than keeping messing him and other people about, but they have to know that the rescues are going to the right home. I am really puritanical about rescue dogs - I would never EVER dream of taking one back, but the amount of idiots who do is amazing  Most of them dont even give the poor dog a try at a decent life  Not saying you would be like that at all of course, but that is why they are so fussy?

Good luck, and remember that greyhounds are far superior (and more suitable for you) than a JRT any day :D

The trouble is i cant travel very far, and my mum is getting very frustrated too as she hates having to leave me on my own all day and i hate being alone all day too! :(

Keep your fingers crossed croftview change their mind when they hear it from me and anyone else they want to that i dont have panic attacks i just get anxious which makes me feel ill! And i cant go to places far away at the moment .. we have a forestry commission park, country park and massive dog field in walking distance from where i live so thats not even an issue! :(

This won't go down well, but if you keep getting rejected maybe they are right and you don't have the right home/environment.

Greyhound Gap rehome countrywide, they use alot of fosters so dogs could be in your area, speak to Lisa if you can and give her a chance to help you.

If you are not stuck on it being a Grey, then The Little Dog Rescue are purely foster based rescue so full knowledge of the dogs needs are given, making it very easy to match your requirements (yes they rehome to flats too!!). ;)

Don't give up, if you really want to help save a dogs life keep going. Honestly it's SO worth it in the end.

I'll leave that up to you to decide

I have a large ground floor flat with a large well fenced shared garden.
I am home 24/7 currently and everywhere i go at the moment the dog could come too, my nan & neighbour have both offered to dog sit whenever i need to go out somwhere the dog couldnt go.
I have an older cat and a house rabbit who lives in a large secure run.
I am opposite to a huge well fenced dog field and have two huge local country parks.
Have time to walk the dog however many times a day it needs.
Dog would never be left in the garden as its shared or left all day
Its just me and my mum who has owned dogs before.
No small kids visit at all

What is so wrong with that unless im missing somthing?

Thanks i'll have a look on the website :D

I agree with cavecanem. The right dog will come to you at the right time. I know its hard when you are looking for a companion animal but one will turn up in the end:)

Humm yes or in my case 1 turned up...then another...then another.....now at number 6 and counting cos new foster boy arrives any day soon...

It's a slippery slope towards being over run with the buggers...but wouldn't change it!!:D

Don't give up! It took me a long time the first time i got my own dog.
Everywhere turned me down because my mum is in a wheelchair but i just made it my mission to continually bug them until they gave into giving me a dog.
A number of years later and we have had 6 dogs from them.

It took me 8 or 9 months to find my first dog of my own. I think you a whining a little prematurely.

I know its just a little hard when your on your own all day, and have absolutly nothing else to look forward to :(

I can only take so many knocks back lol

Are you getting help for your anxiety?

I was getting counsilling and CBT every 2 weeks, but i havent seen them in about 2 months due to their holidays over lapping and then i had tonsillitus :o
Its a bit inconsistant and i normally have ended back on square one by the time the appointments come back around!

Im the kind of person when i fall i fall hard and it takes me a good while to work my way back up :p

Sorry but imo if the rescues have all turned you down ( and you do sound suitable to me) I would also be going out and buying a puppy since you have a support network in place.
Obviously it sounds as though this rescue has been hasty, but I don't understand what others think that you will be waiting for if this one also turns you down?
I don't believe there is anything virtuous in trying your best to rescue, and if it's not possible, going out and looking for the perfect friend elsewhere. It may be you weren't meant to have that dog, but were meant to have a pup, which is opposite but the same really to good things come to those who wait....
Good luck with the rescue tomorrow!

I have never posted on this site before (too big and scary!) I just wanted to let you know that the right dog will come along. I was in a similar situation last year, I have mental health problems and aspergers and rescues would not consider me because I was in such a state.

I got my dog (a greyhound called Noodles) through a friend - she knew someone who races greyhounds and he had Noodles to rehome. I know lots of people strongly disagree with taking grayhounds directly from the racing kennels, but I went to visit them several times, I walked him, I have a contract with the people that if there are any problems he is to go back to them. I also got to be friends with his partner and I go and visit them regularly.

My life has been so much better since I got him, I used to be scared of people looking at me and I was terrified children, now Noodles has a fan club of local kids! I have no option other than to go out with him several times a day and we have become very bonded, he is the most important thing to me.

People said I was irresponsible to take on a dog when I could barely look after myself but without him, I would still be in the same mess, but now I am starting to look for a job, doing voluntary work and not putting such a strain on the NHS!

This is what annoys me. This attitude.

If i can't have what i want right NOW i will get it somewhere else.
Thats why we have such a situation with dogs be killed every day in shelters.

And if you went to a responsible breeder not a BYB then you would probably get the same response as you did from a rescue.

To be honest if i was a rescue of responsible breeder and i had been told the OP doesn't leave the house because of panic attacks i would probably have issues rehoming to the too. Its up to the OP to set it straight with them that that is not an issue.

As said previously, give Lisa at Gap a call or Kelli at GRWE, she's in hertfordshire
Neither are narrow minded and if its the right home for the dog then it will be a yes!

Good luck, sounds like a dog is just what you need.

Thanks for commenting :D
It always makes me feel a little better when i hear about people getting out of their hole :)

I emailed Lisa, she doesnt have anything suitable currently :(
