Hello,
My mum has just rung me and told me that our horses killed a deer this morning by kicking it to death! Next door had seen it and tried to chase horses off but couldnt! I think it was actually mums horse as hes the one who chases thigs like foxes and dogs. Now apparently my horse is traumatised and really upset. Mum says shes running around crying! I feel really bad, has any one else heard of this? x

Aww I'm so sorry. One of our cleints horses kicked one of our sheep once and killed it, I think she was just playing, but the poor sheep didn't stand a chance.

well aparently they cornered it and just kicked it! It was very quick but im still completely shocked! We have foxes and deer on the field all the time.

I would imagine the horses were chasing the deer off the hay if your ground is snow covered. Our neighbours have both had all their front porch plants nibbled away and I've seen tracks up our field from the deer towards our ponies hay but obviously they've not gone nearer due to the ponies. Our deer won't starve: there's a huge stack of not so good hay we ditched from the barn last year, just in a heap in our woods (ponies excluded!) they could pick through and there's a few patches of almost grass in there under the trees too, and the stream is still in full flow not iced up.

I wonder if they were trying to protect the herd, thinking the deer was a predator, or if the deer was stealing their food - which is quite likely, horses aren't always keen of other horses near them whilst eating

My friend who's a fellow HHO'er, had turned away her horse that was recovering from a fractured leg. She worked at the local farm shop which did farm trails looking at loads of different animals for kids. They took on her horse to add to the attraction, and a few months later she was asked to move him.... a lamb had got into his paddock and he picked the lamb up in his mouth and tossed it in the air and killed it - in front of a school trip of children!!!!

Sienna quite deliberately tried to kill a deer when she was younger, she sneaked up on it and attacked it, hurt it quite badly but it just managed tojump the fence to get away.
I think we underestimate how protective and aggressive horses are. Friends and I were discussing recently the documented cases of horses killing and eating other animals!!

Such a shame, horses can be like this towards smaller animals in their fields, including dogs and cats. Sadly years ago at our small holding one of our cats got kicked by one of our horses and it broke his back, we had to have him pts, it was devastating and a stark reminder of how horses can behave in this way.

I've found various dead hedgehogs and rabbits in my cob's field over the years. Worst one was when he was "pawing" a wild rabbit and hadn't quite killed it, it was obviously very badly injured. I had to put it out of its misery and cried for hours afterwards.

how awful, poor little deer. prob over the feed....

horses killing and EATING other animals?!?!

one of mine doesnt really like small animals like dogs, i think she has potential to injure another animal due to aggression....
other 2 pay no attention to them.

I was doing a live TV interview at a hunt kennels once - looked over the interviewer's shoulder and saw horse in field reach over fence and pick a hound pup up out of a pen and start swinging it gently back and forth!

Thankfully I was able to signal the hunt groom to what was going on - she grabbed the horse - and the tv camera DIDN'T catch it! Pup was unhurt!

But all animals are likely to gang up on others - I once had to rescue a stray Border Collie from a field of ewes and lambs. They had him cornered and the ewes were taking it in turn to go forward and head-butt him and strike him with their front legs. Poor mite was batered and bruised and scared witless!

I saw a pony pick up the yard cat by the hair on his back and move him away from another horse who was being aggressive to him and had him cornered.

And seen sheep killed by horses (idiot farmer decided it was a good idea to put 50 sheep in a field with 6 horses who had probably never seen sheep - took a while to sort that one out)

At the moment we have a fox and two vixens roaming around our fields - and then horses are just wound up by this - they go racing after them every time they seem them!

My horse used to go out of his way to stomp the chicks and the ducklings, especially if they happened to get in his way at feed time. I had another horse that cornered and killed a goat that was trying to share his food.
