Really useful 'Can I tow' flow chart

great table!! very user friendly

horse trailers seem to be a total no go though! (trailer MAM less than 750kg)

I think you've misunderstood.. it is blimmin confusing though.

Basically, if you have a really heavy car, this limits your towing as you can only have a max of 3500kg total weight - without B+E. At the same time, your tow-load can't exceed the vehicle towing it i.e. a corsa towing a HB510 or the Corsa would be be pushed off the road if it braked. But then, if you are authorised to drive B+E, you can TOW a max of 3500kg, but you then NEED that heavy 4x4 to tow it. Gah!!! Why isn't life simpler???

(Why this doesn't apply to tractors towing trailers piled high with hay is another story)

Here is a website dedicated to towing horses and is also very useful:

http://www.towinghorsetrailers.co.uk/index.htm

You just type in what trailer you have, plus horses weight n stuff and it tells you what cars should be able to tow it... simples.

Well I know I can because I took the test and passed :p

Yay!!! My reversing was awful but I passed eventually too... reversing still awful though. I just hate LWB vehicles but I can't fit anything in a small one... gahhh!!!!!

Reversing I found easy, I failed the first one on the actual driving. Grr! I've only towed a few times since I passed in November, have to say though, when I buy a 4x4 (I'm using the estate at the mo) I'm definitely getting a SWB!! I want a shogun and the LWB ones are huge!!

Ha ha jesstickle that is so funny!! I'm giving back the landy to my dad and just bought an A6 Avant Allroad - an estate!!!!!!!

After weighing everything up (not literally - would have cost a fortune at weighbridge I tell you) I thought as my business car and leisure, this was probably up to towing my weeny 505 & small horse.

I'll probably wreck it in first few weeks jack-knifing trailer into the trees in the drive!!!! :D:D:D:D

I make OH do my reversing. My estate with the trailer on the back is about 100 foot long!! He doesn't have a license so I do all the going forward stuff on the roads and then he has to park when we get back to the yard. It's so massive!

Will have to trade up to 4x4 one day as I have two horses but whilst Nits isn't doing anything the estate does ok. Especially as it was free as OH's parents gave it to me. Bless them :)

My OH is useless like that... he can just about hitch up and direct me but thats about it :D. Mind you, poor ol' Batty, my F reg landy, has no power steering and I'm about the only one (apart from Dad) who can fix it and keep her going. However, as much as I love her, I can't run a car and her.

FWIW..I test drove the Merc ML320 amongst many options and it came close to the Avant A/R.... bit more expensive on fuel but so smooth! Worth a look when you get round to it... 2nd hand on market probably £4-6k...
