I would love a loan for August as I have don't really have a horse I can do shows on now the one I used to ride has been sold...I can't have a long term loan due to certain circumstances however I would love one for the summer! I've put up ads on preloved, local forums, facebook etc however unsurprisingly I've had no replies as it is a big ask...anyone have any tips or ideas? Or is just too much of an ask?

I doubt many people would go for this, it is a big hassle for a short amount of time. I am loaning my boy and wouldn't entertain it as he is for full loan and I wouldn't want him unsettled for that short a time to then be unsettled again.

Might be worth putting your location on in case anyone on here could oblige, I would imagine you are more likely to get a short term share??

I hate summer loans. Give the horse back when the mornings and evenings are too dark for fun and the mucking out needs doing daily and the costs sky rocket. Sharing u pay ur way but owner gets to enjoy horse too. I'd only go for short term share in winter though, I don't need the help in summer. Perhaps volunteering at a local rda or riding school would give u riding over summer?

A full loan you get the horse to keep full time i.e it could move stables to your yard etc.

A share would be you getting a couple of days or however long the owner and you decide a week and the horse stays where it is.

Could you offer to help out in exchange for riding at a school/yard/friends?

As someone else said it just smacks of joyriding, not accusing you of this perse but it is what it comes across as.

A girl at our yard has just taken on a loan for the summer from the local equestrian college, while her own is recovering from injury. Their holidays are just starting and she will give her back when the new term starts. It suits her down to the ground (the little mare is lovely!)

Do you have an equestrian college nearby?! Maybe they have something?

Ironically, I know of someone looking to loan out their horse (to stay at their yard) for the summer, who's having trouble finding anyone. Lovely horse, no issues at all - just most people want a longer term commitment! So can be tricky from both sides!!!

Would imagine parent's with children off for summer would be quite interested in this?

Just be careful, I'm sure your intentions are as honest as they come but a short term loan it really sets alarm bells ringing for owners.

I really don't mean any harm, although I can see what you all mean. It's just because I've got no chance of full loaning or even part loaning regularly, but I would really like a ride over the summer as I've got lots of free time. Lots of you were saying helping at a riding school in exchange for riding, and trust me, I have tried! I live in a very non-horsey area so there is really only one riding school that I could go to and they don't do that kind of thing.

I will be difficult as short term, especially the nicer summer months are not really what people are looking for.

But there could be someone out there injured or busy for the Sumner so keep putting your advert out there, all the websites, tack shops etc.

Word of mouth I'd probably best though, someone you know or a friend or a friend, so keep asking.

Good luck.

I was looking for something similar a while back as I'm just finishing my A levels and then am off to university in October so don't have my own horse that the moment.
I found that most loans (understandably so!) were for longer periods, your best bet is perhaps someone who's pregnant so cant ride over the summer...
In the end I gave up loaning/sharing and will be working at a racing and polo yard over the summer helping exercise the horses so you never know what may turn up :)

I would b.open. to the right rider sharing/part loaning for a short time as long as o knew up front. I had a girl share a few years ago from end of Jan until around August as she was on a year out b4 starting uni. I suppose it depends on ur horses and the riders! X
