Got the vet coming on thursday but I have been looking all over the internet at things like EPSM, Kissing Spines etc
he doesn't have the right symptoms for these, what do you think has anyone heard of this sort of thing before?

Really miserable and grumpy, fine until you go near him or try and touch him.
Especially touchy round the flank/stomach area, will kick out at the slightest touch.
Very tucked up, and humped back.
Standing with hind feet right underneath him.
Wanting to lean his back side on things, ie when tied up will turn so his bum is leaning on the wall.
pacing going down hills. has bucked going down a steep hill.
has lost all his hindquarters, normally has a lovely big round bum, but now it looks very weedy and like it should be on another horse.

When being ridden tips rider forward and hollows in front, won't take a contact. Clamped tail.
When walking will jog every few steps, but very forward going and bouncy out hacking.

lunged today seemed very uncomfortable on left, couldn't extend in trot and was dragging hind toes.
This started last monday (28th jan)

Any ideas? I can't find anything

Oh so sorry to hear that he has not improved, as I saw your 1st post about him being 'grumpy'

Poor pony, he doesn't sound happy.

It could be any number of things ranging from pulled a muscle, something like a kidney problem, ulcers, just doesn't like winter, feeling cold, all sorts. I do hope you get it sorted, will be interested with what your vet comes up with.
 
Poor Axel! I would stop riding him and lunging him. Can you loose school him? Might give you a chance to observe him when he is free to move around by himself. He sounds like a chap in a lot of discomfort - I hope the vet makes a quick diagnosis and he is on the road to recovery very soon - he is such a nice looking horse.
 
Does he react wherever yyou touch him? How is he eating? Is he lying down etc? Fromw hat you ahve said regarding stance, almost sounds foot related, but then could be to do with back....

well he doesn't react if you touch him on his back where the saddle goes, but if you touch anywhere on his body and hindquarters he will lay his ears flat back and try and bite and kick out.
He is lying down in his box, and rolls in the field happily, even rolling right over.

it's hard to explain, but he tenses up as soon as you go near him, like he really doesn't want to be touched at all.

Thank you, I turned him out in the field this morning and watched him for a while, he doesn't look right, but he doesn't look lame if that makes sense. He trotted about for a bit but he looked quite stiff.
 
the hind feet tucked under , is it sort of like a laminitis stance?

my horse went like that and it turned out he was very foot sore. he wasnt lame though.
Have you checked for a digital pulse?

He could be sore in his feet and just grumpy because of it. Doesnt want you to touch him as he might think 'oh god here she comes to make me move when my feet hurt!'
 
That's an idea, but he's not doing it to take weight off his front feet, I wish I had taken a picture of him as it's quite difficult to explain.
He's ok when he is walking along, and the farrier looked at him yesterday. It looks like either a tummy/gastric problem or a back problem.
I just hope my vet will get to the bottom of it.

But you know the really ironic thing about it is..............he looked fine tonight

my horse was footsore on his hinds.

The vet said the way he was standing and when he was walking he was slightly stepping in with his hinds was him trying to get the weight of his back feet.

this in turn led to him becoming very stiff through his back, behind the saddle area. and generally grumpy.

But the farrier would have noticed if he was footsore i suppose.
 
Thats just typical isn't it. Oh well even if the vet finds nothing and Axey seems better its best to get him checked over and be on the safe side. Chin up hon he'll be fine.
 
That's very interesting, Axel is on only his 2nd set of hind shoes, he has been barefoot behind up until then and he wasn't even footsore when I decided to have hinds put on.
Although you may have put your finger on something there, he was shod 6 weeks ago and was due yesterday but farrier decided to leave him until the vet has been.
He was very grumpy while being shod and even kicked out at the farrier back then.

Sea he does sound like P, honestly he really does. I have started her on glucosimine and Blood Liquid to pep her up and I still need to order some Coligone and if no improvement she will go on Regumate (not a prob for you LOL). Rode her today and if I put my legs around her she lost her back end underneath herself, she has lost bum muscle and she missteps with her forelegs rather a lot. She is absolutely unwilling to work forwards into a contact, so am riding her *hunting style* with a contact but no pressure to go round. Today I removed her rugs and tonight she is only in a v light duvet and a rain sheet (I feel incredibly wicked) as this takes pressure off her back. Am adament there is nothing externally wrong with her, but there is something very off about her.

Sorry, am waffling - hope you get to the bottom of what is wrong with the gorgeous lad x

i had bought him and he had never been shod behind and this happened within the first month of me having him!
 
Thnaks Weezy, the funny thing is that he is very, very forward going to ride, I had the best hack ever on him on saturday. He bounces along in walk, but will jog every few strides or so.
In the school when I put my leg on he bucked, but still was jogging and walking really fast. He is like a totally different horse to ride, but in a good way! I mean he didn't spook or nap at all but was just lovely and bouncy!!

I stopped the Coligone for now as I want the vet to see him 'au natural' lol, but he seemed a lot better this evening, but he has been out in the field all day.

How strange! will deffo mention it to vet in the morning then. what was the treatment?
