Im worried as Ive gone in to do my two youngsters and Ive found a plait in my boys mane, its been raining here most of the day and both manes are totally straight and soaked however this plait and tangle was in the middle of his mane.

This morning Louis (Horse plaited) was roaming round our car park area out of his field, this is the second time weve found him here in the past week. There is a pile of dirt in their field around 6 and a half ft and around 2 metres next to it is the post and rail fence, there was no hoof marks on the pile of dirt so we dont know how he could of got out. Bearing in mind the post and rail is quite high too.

He is not that confident with men and Im just thinking maybe if they opened the gate and then couldnt catch him or something they just left him there, there is no reason for him to want to get out of the field, no grass the other side or anything and hes never done this before, both times in the morning when weve found him he is just standing next to his siter the other side of the gate, so not even trying to escape, it just doesnt make sense.
Im just left very worried now.
Im in Folkestone in Kent.

Let the local police know, start checking at random times, but I really wouldn't worry too much. Its VERY unlikely.

You're about to get yelled at because some people think this is a load of bull, but I commend you for being so caring for your boy.

I would put padlocks on the gate as well though! Sounds like kids might be messing around and letting him out

xxxx

Oh hun how horrid for you!!! Can you tell if there are any different tyre marks around, ie a lorry or trailer. Don't mean to scare you but is it possible they have tried loading him and couldn't??

Either that or it could be some saddo just trying to scare you!!

There isn't one recorded case of a so called 'plaited' horse being stolen. Stay vigilent but don't vworry yourself half to death.

I hope it turns out to be nothing, but best contact your local horse watch and police and let them know, take the plait out and try be extra careful with security. I know some people think its all a hoax but we have had some serious issues with this and I would take it all really seriously. I hope you dont have any further problems.
xx

I know but whoever gives me [****] can seriously get f***** its not nice to find and it was a definate plait. Im going to put padlocks on, just I live on the main road its a national speed limit road and no footpath for people to walk unless they knew otherwise. Just very worried and wondered if anybody had heard anything in this area, I knew there were pikies here a few months ago with lots of cobs, thanks flamehead x

Padlock your gates at both the hinge end (so gate cannot be lifetd off - unles you already have as hinge that stops this) and the other opening end.

I have a feeling this whol plait thing is a little bit of a hoax to worry people more than anything - ie someone plaiting the mane (if it is a genuine plait) knowing this causes worry.

As for the horse being out - either someone is intentionally letting him out or your horse is a bit of a fool and is managing to get out himself! I would certainly report it anyway as 'suspicious' but if this has happened twice my feeling would be, if a potential thief can get that close to your horse to plait it (mine wouldn't stand still that long) then you'd think, if they were intending to steal it, it'd have been taken already.

Never hurts to be extra vigilant but i wouldn't worry yourself too much. Maybe get the horses freezemarked and chipped as a deterrent if they're not done already?

Yes thank you they are both microchipped it just doesnt make sense, hes never been one to jump fences or anything its always the filly! It was a tangle and you could see a plait through the middle, just I know what hes like with men trying to head collar him etc. Thank you for your support!

Could he have gotten under the fence? I know this sounds silly but I had a mare that would slither under all but the lowest of fences (god only knows how she did it..

Ahhh I hope its just kids messing around, I would padlock both ends & be sorely tempted to accidentally electrify the gate

Sorry to hear you are worried about your horse. Do you have a picture of the plait and if so could you post it pls so we can all see what it looks like...

It is probably nothing, as no thefts are recorded, but to make sure, move him if you feel unhappy.
