Really worried - I cant fix him (with pics)

Ok, I am just about to pop outside and take a photo of the wound and then will post it.

Badger, my 1yo mini shet had a fly bite which turned into a large marble sized pus filled lump. Vet put him on antibiotics on about 3 weeks ago and he finished the course. Eventually at the weekend it popped but the swelling spread to a 4" squared area (big for a mini shet which is 28" tall). this is on his mandible (lower cheek).
This 4" sqaured area is now an open wound and I have been bathing it twice a day and everytime i come back form work it seems to have spread. Vet coming back in the morn but it is getting silly big for such a wee lad and he keeps rubbing it and scrating it with his hin leg. Any ideas?

Aloe vera juice in a handful of feed and aloe gel on the wound or manuka haoney - both will help it heal.

one of mine had a bad wound on her shoulder (ripped on gate latch) about eight inches, vet sowed it but so much puss (sorry) behind after two days the stitches burst ,bathed it with pevadine, nappy creamed around the outside and put manuka honey in the wound. sounds like yours is itching the wound and making it worse, can you put somthing on him like dogs wear to stop them bitting at a wound .

manuka honey sounds good and so does the cradle but i dont think i would get one for a mini? Also, he is rubbing it on the wall as well :-(

One of my dogs had a lump removed from her tail, she kept removing bandages, ripping stitches etc and it wouldn't heal. In desperation vet removed stitches and said just try letting it heal naturally. I kept it smothered in manuka honey and it started granulating from the inside and healed really well. Could have been a coincidence but would certainly use it again on wounds.

The honey and or the aloe will stop it itching as well - may take a day or two to stop but it will.

Should have said - make sure the manuka is at least 10+ - anything less isn't as effective.

Poor lad it looks sore, one of my ponies had a wound similar to that a few years ago I had hibiscrubed it and put purple spray on and got vet out the following day they said to carry on with what I was doing, also gave him antibiotics. I found the purple spray helped to keep the flies away from the wound so he didnt rub it more and it healed up pretty quickly.

Just a thought although it would prob be too big but would one of those rug bibs help in any way??? I mean the ones that stop a horse ripping his rugs, I think the are plastic?

You can a pot of 10+ in Tesco's for a tenner - it is really worth it though as it will heal and prevent any further infection.

Its not cheap but it might well do the job I'm afraid, no experience of it myself though

See what vets say tommorrow but that is quite big on a little pone. I might be wrong but not sure if regular hibiscrubbing can actually slow granulation and healing.

Good point ester, it just seems to get coverd in pus though which is why I wash it. Wont wash it before vet comes so she can see it in all its minging glory!

If not Tesco's try any big supermarket, boots or a health food shop - it is amazing stuff and really does work!!

There have been a few posts in the vets section recently about people using it on all sorts of wounds with great success - and at a tenner a jar its cheaper then anything the vet is going to give you - and if he licks it off it won't do him any harm!!

it might sound stupid but what about putting a dog buster collar on him sohe can,t get to it it might or might not work

think you will need to bath it regulary, also try shaving hair around wound to make cleaning easier nappy cream around the wound stops puss sticking to hair and makes cleaning easier .

Poor pony!!! I agree though, it does look clean.

Hope he gets better soon, was going to suggest a dog collar, although they are usually plastic, so don't know if that could cause further problems!!

I used the Tesco 10+ honey, it did the job! Son was most upset when I wouldn't let him put it on his toast

As your vet is coming back in the morning, I would strongly suggest you ask for his/her advice.

pooor wee thing that does look big for him!!! Nothing much to add from everyone else 'cept to say that manuka has been used with much success by quite a few people on our yard.

Can you get a stretchy hood and attach a dressing with the honey/gel/ or whatever onto it to keep it covered and protect it from his rubbing?...

ya get the vet back out keep cleaning it with hibi scrub i would feed and apply aloe vera to the site!
