Rear end trouble - digestion

My 3yr old Cob gets very dirty back legs and tail, I couldn't understand why as he doesn't seem to have a upset stomach, poos in stable and field ok, don't seem runny at all.
But i have recently noticed when he passes wind he sort of dribbles, not sure what to do, this doesn't happen in the summer and he seems fine in himself.

Any ideas why this is happening or suggestions on what i could do?

My mare is going through the same thing at the moment. Had blood cell count and worm egg count done and they came back normal. She's now on codeine to help her absorb more water and the vets own pro-biotic. Fingers crossed that will sort it!!!

we have had this with one of ours since he lived out for a couple of months in the autumn. couldn't get rid of the terrible poo stain down one buttock and leg (he is grey!)

in desperation, have tried him on haylage balancer. He's been having it for 2weeks now and it is really starting to have an effect Still a slight dribble but nothing like it was and he is getting cleaner by the day. For about £15 a month it is well worth trying!

I wouldn't worry it seems to be a winter thing - I think a lot of horses tend to drink a lot being on hay or haylage and through boredom when stabled in winter, so there is tons of excess water about hence the dribbly mess - most of mine do it too!! As long as he is fine and normal in every other way then I would just ignore, if you want to stop any staining it may be worth putting some pig oil/baby oil down his legs/tail/butt crack!!!

It does only happen in the winter and the only difference is that he is stabled at night and is on haylage (was on hay but farmer ran out not long ago). No change in feed and only has a small amount so i can give him vit & min supplement everyday. He is fine in himself.
I have invested in a tail bag to keep his tail white which is working well , may have to get some baby oil, thought about getting some undertail wipes but realised that i would get through way too many in a day.

We have had this problem with two of ours this winter. It did improve when we mixed hay and haylage 50/50 and they seem to have settled down again now.
