Hi everyone, just looking for some advice..... I have begun to lunge my new 6 year old dutch WB, I have had her just over two weeks now and when I got her she was underweight as she had just aborted foals at the beginning o this year. She has been a broodmare for a couple of years and has been started slowly on the lunge before I bought her. She has completed level 1 dressage in Holland about two years ago, so she has been worked before. I have hacked her out on a few occassions only trotting and no problems. However, I lunged her today using her bridle and saddle and worked ok in walk and trot but when I asked for canter she reared and bucked quite a few times, pulling away from me.

She has wolf teeth which were revealed in her vetting, so could this be the problem? I am planning on having these removed once she gains weight. I bought her a cair saddle so as she gains weight I can change the gullet to fit. Could it be the saddle?? or does this seem like a green attitude, not wanting to canter on either rein?

I rode her in the sand school and she also had an unwillingness to move forward from leg aids. I am not expecting her to be perfect and I know the road may be long ahead getting her back to fitness etc.

If anyone has experienced this I would be grateful to hear from you.

have you tried cantering her without a saddle? just to see if she does it without as well as with.

a lot of horses dont like cantering on a tight circle, especially youngsters. Have you tried looseschooling her? would be interested as to how she would go then.

How are you trying to get her into canter? voice, whip, etc etc

Thanks for your help. Yes I am going to have her back checked out ASAP.

I was just using my voice to ask her for canter, although I had the lunge whip in my left hand and wasnt cracking it or anything. I will try her without the saddle tomorrow and see if that makes a difference! Will let you know how it goes ;o)

I:d treat her as a yousgter learning to canter and do it on as striaght line to start with, up a sloping soft track or field.
SO she is going forward and balanced

Cantering a 20m circle, or smaller, on lunge is not easy.

I would alos try a tradional flocked saddle
I treid a Cair on my very laid back horse and he hated it-
bounced and tail swishing in canter-
which he does not ever do.
Ths same size and fit in wool flocked, no problem

I had this with my mare but did it whilst free schooling and she was okay, i think she was objecting to the lunge line and restriction as she wasnt balanced enough. Bless her... She does have a natural tendancy to buck when going into canter now on the lunge or free schooling (or indeed when i am on top!), but more playful than objection. If she does it without a saddle on still, try it without the lunge line...
