Hi
I have a 11 month old gelding, he was castrated 2 weeks ago... he has always been so quiet! but over the last couple of days when i pick out hisfront feet, he has started to rear, i'm not quite sure how to stop him doing it... also when i put him back in the field today he took off trying to make me let go, but i hung on and turned him towards me and made him stand before i took his headcollar off... he is acting a bit coltish towards my mare too... how long before the hormones wear off!?

Any advice would be good!

He will still be fertile for up to 6 weeks after the castration. Just be firm with him and make him understand that you are the lead mare.

I had a 12 month old colt gelded and was told that it could take 3-4 weeks for the testosterone to disappear out his system. He used to rear too but it was a phase that he eventually grew out of. I used to just ignore him and keep walking on, he came down eventually but spent about 18 months on his hind legs! A lot of it was just high spirits - it wasn't malicious He was quite big (ended up 16.1hh)
