As HP says, he's just testing the boundaries! I would just do all you can to take the pressure off, rebuild the confidence plus find clever (as opposed to crude) ways to assert your authority - usually means defusing situations so the horse almost ends up thinking 'you know, I actually don't know why I bothered doing that, it certainly hasn't achieved anything & I think I was probably over-reacting anyway'... OK, humanising a bit too much, but it's pretty true!
