Hi

I have just had my horse rear (vertically) unexpectactly with me on him after he had jumped a small jump. he did have the pole down. just wondered what brought that on? He was incredibly nappy today, more so than usual. He has hardly be ridden recently due to weather and state of the ground.

The Physio and saddler are coming out next week. Or is he just very fresh?

any ideas greatlyfully received

Has he ever done it before? You mention his napping, does he rear as part of his napping?

Seems an odd reaction, you would expect more of a buck/zoom off rather than a rear. Presumably he must have jumped the jump and then stopped and did it?

If its a one off, it might just be that he hit the pole and it hurt and he was paying you/it back... dont know.

Share horsey will sometimes try to stop dead and nose at/lick his front legs if they've hit a pole... I suppose it could be a very extreme version of making a fuss over the bit that hurts? "When me front legs where too low they got a nasty knock so now I'm putting them RIGHT in the air"? Brought on by lack of recent exercise etc...

Also possible he has lost muscle with cold/lack of riding so saddle might be hurting... good to get that checked. But like OldMare says odd reaction...

Must be pretty scary for you - so, ((hugs))

Yes he has lost a lot of muscle tone. starting to lunge etc and get back into a gentle exercise regime. He has reared about a year ago after which we found out the tree in the saddle was twisted and it didnt fit. Thanks for help

I expect that he's just in need of a check up -like you've done with the physio and saddler

He may have dislodged his saddle when he was jumping/ landing, and as you say he has lost some muscle tone, his saddle could be a bit wide and moving around
