Why do horses rear?

Is it an excitement thing or a frustration thing or both? Horse isnt in pain, ive had his back checked, and it was hurting him so ive bought a new saddle etc and hes not sore any more.

But hes started rearing when i ask to stand still. How can you discapline a horse not to rear????

He doesnt do it in a school, just when were out hacking.

Thanks

if you are asking him to stop and he wants to go, pent up energy they go up, but that is not the only reason they rear.

can be excitement, evasion, maybe fear or lack of understanding as what is required/frustration... I am sure there are other reasons can't think of any more at moment

If your horse was rearing through pain, but you've fix the pain, he'll still be in the habit of rearing, even though he doesn't feel the pain any more.
You need to break the habit and let him realise it won't hurt any more =)

That wont get him in the habit of spinning will it ?? :s

Willl try it though!

One would hope not :D

Seriously though, the most important thing is to keep calm and react as soon as you feel he may do something, if you are not happy with spinning him try to get him well flexed in the neck. As soon as he stands still make much of him and walk him on. It may be something that will take ages or stops as quickly as it started. :)
