Rearing!?

Hey we just started doing natural horsemanship with my pony and she is rearing alot when ever we smack the carrot stick on the ground and we tried stepping on the rope when she does it and backing her up pulling down jerking the leadrope but she does not seem to stop. Of course she is not very big so it is not to threatining but I know this is a horrible habit and I would like to stop it as soon as possible. I am sure you all know that smacking the carrot stick down is required and the only other time she rears is when you very lightly tap her with the carrot stick. she is only 12.1 so as I say it is not to threatning but a horrible habit so I would like to stop it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to this by yourself, from books or are you having helf from an experienced NH trainer.

If not get one before you confuse your pony and make it dangerous.
 
Well in my opinion, any sort of work or training done with a horse that has this reaction to it is simply not working!!! You must be confusing the horse or upsetting it in some way so I would suggest you stop and get some advice from a trainer before making things worse. Sorry to be blunt but it does not sound very natural horsemanship like to me!
I have done hours upon hours of in hand and ground work training with my horse and have never had this reaction because he knew the boundaries and what was being asked of him and I feel that any training, no matter what you call it or badge it as should have the same output...a happy horse who learns and moves forward in a confident manner through trust and understanding in his handler.
 
Get a qualified trainer out to help you, there is only so much you can do yourself without the proper training and you may well end up damaging the pony longterm (rearing is not a good habit to get into!) and sounds like confusion.
Also i echo going over to monty roberts rather than parelli - to me its a lot simpler, more effective and not confusing
 
My little 12.3hh mare would give wee rears when you would worm her etc. Just things that she doesnt want to do (has not reared when rode).

They arent big rears, just about 20-30 cms off the ground. Tried the tug her down again but doesnt work.

I heard a trainer saying that smashing an egg on the head works, something about it makes the horse think they have hit there head and its bleeding, or a flick of the crop to the stomach. I dont think i would do either as hes not the best trainer (wont even go into the nasty things ive seen him do).
 
I agree with KandR, I have tried the whole Parelli thing and found it very confusing, so no wonder some horses find it confusing as well. I have always had better results monty roberts type techniques, I personally feel this as close to NH as the commercial NH practices go. Anyone can do it and you dont have to fork out hundreds of pounds for the headcollar, carrot stick etc.
 
hey I am acctualy listening to a pro NH trainer and she does not do it when I ride. I know this is not a confusion because she has done it before. Thanks for your comments

how about giving up the NH and going back to good old fashioned common sense before that pony is ruined????? FFS

I would change the instructor.
If your pony doesnt rear when being ridden then what exactly are you trying to acheive.
As for the pulling back on her as control, anyone with half a brain will tell you that you dont take on a rearer or it gets worse.

If someone hit you with a stick youd jump a bit wouldnt you?
