Reason for not picking up a hind foot?

Quite honestly - My girl just does it to be obtuse! - a quick 'Oi' - usually wakes her up!

Only thing I can think of is some uncomfort in Back/Pelvis.

I presume your talking about when trying to pick it out????

Horse belongs to a friend of mine so trying to do some research for her - the vet is coming out on monday to do the works but it is looking likely that a previous pelvic fracture that hasn't healed properly or arthritis but looking for any other similiar stories...

Horse has to be sediated to have hind shoes put on and is unable to hold the leg up for longer that about 5 seconds.

My horse did this, has (mild) bone spavin

or pain in another foot (usually the opposite)

This.

Or my Clydie mare was always a nightmare with her feet and had to be sedated to be trimmed, was a bit better with fronts than hinds. Unfortunately we lost her to a mystery illness, which caused a rectal prolapse and I have often wondered if she was uncomfortable long before that.

I'm no expert but it sounds bad that he can only pick it up for 5 secs and has to be sedated for back shoes. I agree with previous poster - could be a bone spavin/arthritis- my boy hated his back legs being picked up and he was diagnosed with bone spavin. I would get him checked out by vet.

If it is the off hind it could be a training issue, this can happen when they are young, unbalanced and the handler is working not with the left hand and it all goes wrong and the horse gets a scare and then won't pick up again with out being convinced that they are not going to die.

I have seen many horses get over on a home visit. PM me if the horse is not lame as it may work out cheeper than the vet route.
