who is the most reasonably priced insurance for horses?

lily is with insurance emporium, but i’m not entirely happy with them and the 17% excess is putting me off insuring the new girl with them. they’re cheap, but they take forever to get back to you and altogether it hasn’t been very straightforward dealing with them.

NFU won’t touch me because i’ve claimed in the last 3 years for lily, so they’re not an option.

everyone else just seems to be extortionate prices! - petplan, SEIB and KBIS etc.

are there any others i maybe haven’t heard of?

i’ll definitely be insuring her, i don’t want to self insure because it gives me peace of mind, but i also don’t want to pay thousands a year for a little welsh pony doing low level stuff haha

E&L (who underwrite insurance emporium I am pretty sure) used to get a bad rap - but I had no issues with them and they were very prompt and easy to deal with in a claim they could have wiggled out of if they really wanted to (lymphangitis when previous history for cellulitis) - so I would recommend seeing what they will offer

Pet plan increased my policy by £100 but my pony is now 12. No claims in last 3 years big think insurance is going up across the board so was glad was only 20% increase and couldn’t get better deal. I do wonder if people claim more as they are spending more on premiums.

I'm with Agria on the lifetime cover now - up to £10k per year on vets bills, but it is a 25% co pay - but no exclusions
I haven’t heard of this but might be interested as an alternative to my catastrophe cover which has exclusions 😬 are the premiums reasonable if you don’t mind my asking?

Personally I think the problem is that a) there's absolutely no reward for NOT claiming (it'll still be an exclusion), and b) the time limit issue with insurance incentives owners and vets to go in with all the treatments ASAP, when actually a more conservative approach might have sorted the problem.

Lower premiums and a 25% co-pay sound attractive to me; my excess is £500 as it is, and so far my claims seem to be a couple of thousand tops. Worth thinking about.

I have just run through a quote with them.

It does specify anything that occurred before the policy started is excluded. So we might have back and 3 legs excluded, depends how they reviewed history.

I think the no exclusions is once on the policy and up an running.

It is 25% co pay plus a fixed excess. So with a £300 fixed excess, cover up to £10 a year, and group 5 (dressage elementary upwards) is £67 a month for us.

But if had a £2.5K bill, I would pay the £850 (excess and 25% after excess) and they would pay £1,350

But I am then paying £804 a year in premiums too.

But if I had big bills might be useful. Hmmmm

Another vote for British Pet Insurance. They were easy to deal with and paid promptly for my mare's treatment (circa 8k worth) with no quibbles. They were also quite competitive. Good luck!

Premiums are reasonable - pre existing conditions are excluded, but conditions that are claimed for aren't, if that makes sense.

Which of those is e.g. a bone chip being removed from a joint, no joint damage, horse sound and competing since?

This is only my personal experience, I’m sure it’s not necessarily the case for all - I used to be with PetPlan and found them brilliant at paying out promptly and without fuss. I’m now with SEIB with different horses as the premium was cheaper than PetPlan and I have found them to be difficult and petty. I’ve been made to feel as though they don’t trust anything I say and it’s been like getting blood out of a stone. I won’t be renewing with them. My advice is not to go for the cheapest premium but the company you feel most confident in.

thankyou everyone! i’ve just decided to insure the new pony with insurance emporium, it’s just a pain that they take over 2 weeks on average to respond to claims!

Yes I agree with this....I'm with Scottish Equestrian and they've been entirely straightforward to deal with so far. They're not too bad price wise - I pay £62pm for horse and trailer insurance - and they are helpful on the phone and quick to pay out.

You'd have to ring them and speak to them about something like that - quite possible they won't exclude if enough time has passed and your vets are content. I put my young horse with them who has no significant veterinary history, and they didn't exclude anything for the minor stuff that was on his record (eg. abscesses and lameness after a kick in the field). My premiums are now considerably cheaper than they were with Petplan too. I've left the older horse on Petplan because he has lots of vet history and its easier to leave him where he is.
