I have seen a really nice horse advertised for sale but it has stringhalt, they are asking 7,000 for it but i think they are just chancing it
What would be a reasonable price to pay for a 17.3, jumps 1.10, really quiet horse with nice paces who has stringhalt???

You don't mention the horses age but 1.10 is really not that big, so I'd say £3,000? Without seeing photos of said horse and knowing what his/her flatowrk is like and whether you can hack on own etc it's hard to say so my price is a highest one assuming everything else is very positive. Like all things about horse prices they are entirely subjective and he is worth what someone will pay for him. (You'll see he has taken on a male gender so apols if he is a mare!)

Are you going to have it vetted, if so ask the vet. You couldn't ever show it seriously and it might not be able to do a dressage test without some loss of marks. It depends on how bad it is.

My best ever horse had stringhalt, but it would be more or less OK when it warmed up and only very occasionally took an odd step - usually in the dressage! It wasn't that obvious and when I went to try the horse the vendor didn't even mention it, hoping that maybe I wouldn't notice! His was just that he took some higher than usual steps sometimes, he didn't snatch his leg right up to the belly as some do.

It also depends on age as sometimes it can get worse with age, with other horses it never gets any worse, maybe it is only due to the actual ageing progress and not the actual stringhalt.

As to price, it does sound an awful lot, especially in the present market. Stringhalt is technically an unsoundness, although mine went through years of hunting, eventing and show jumping and was the soundest and toughest horse I ever owned, he was always ready and fit for work.

I think if it fits the bill in every other way it would be worth having it vetted and ask the vet's opinion. Mine always asked what the price was for any horse I was having vetted and was happy to give an opinion of whether he thought it was about right or not.

I agree with Measles 1.10m for a 17.3hh horse is not great is it? I am sure you could find plenty better horses out there for a good bit less money!
FWIW I have one with Stringhalt and it doesn't ordinarily affect his performance so from that angle I wouldn't worry.

I have a 16.1hh currently jumping 1m05 happily with no soundness issues and I wouldn't dream of asking anything near that much for her. Unless he has an amazing competition record I'd say £3500 max in the current market.

A friend paid £6k for a 17h tB type 7yr old that has stringhalt. It had been to the Burghley young event horse finals. They have owned it for 3 yrs, doing general RC things with no problems so far, but I wouldn't pay that much, and the market has dipped since then..

I have one thats a shiverer (but OK to shoe erc..) and has an occasional 'wonky' step in walk. I am considering loaning him rather than selling as I don't think people will pay much for him.

I was told about £2000 was the most you could expect.

FWIW I wouldn't knowingly buy one because there are a lot of lovely horses out there with no issues..
