I have just taken on a new yard and most of them do not poo pick, LAZY, which I HATE. Im trying to get together a leaflet with maybe 10 bullet points of reasons why you should poo pick, with FACTS etc, if anyone can help me get these 10 bullet points together, that would be GREAT. :-) So come on all you CLEAN & loving horse owners please help me out. :-) S x

keeps the fields looking nice
more utilised grazing as grass doesnt get sour
less worm burden
less flies
less chemical/machinery required to maintain grazing
happy horses on clean fields
opportunity to check fencing/weeds/ragwort as you go
you always find the lost shoes

All the reasons above

+

1. Shows yard is run buy professional person who cares the state of the land

2. Good advert for potential new clients

3. I f you hold shows on the land nice for the event rather than people trotting up pony in in hand class dogging poo,s

4. horses prone to eating dung reduces their interest

A) There is no excuse for not picking up poo's

small acres is a doddle takes little time for gr8 result

just taken me 45 mins to do ours and when more liveries takes longer so what

B) middle acres get an ride on tractor and trailer

c) larger acres get a dee poo machine if you can afford the acres you can afford to look after it

All the above plus:

It's good exercise!!

It gives you an opportunity to spend time with your horse in his / her herd's environment and see how they interract.

Only takes 15 mins to fill up a barrow... each horse will do less than a barrow a day on average grazing. You'd probably get away with only 4 barrow loads a week each which equates to an hour - hardly time consuming!!

lol  i got 3 barrows this morning just from overnight grazing from 4pm last night till 7am this morning ,that was 6 horses worth

also its a good time to check the fields of rubbish thrown over and rabbit holes

well that proves my point. 6 horses and only 3 barrow loads, thats only half a barrow per horse out for 15 hours...so thats only 3.5 barrow loads per horse per week. I think you'd find that a horse out 24/7 on average grazing produces less s**t than one who is stabled (and thus scoffing hay) part of the time.

Are you the yard owner or yard manager?

If so, then if you want the liveries to poo pick, then they will have to do it. On our yard the DIYers poo pick their own fields, and the full or part liveries get it done for them by staff. However, if you are DIY and do not poo pick at least once a week (and clear the field) then staff will do it and you will be charged.

My friend is on a yard where the horses are all turned out together in one large field - but everyone still has to poo pick - I think they each have to pick up 10 poops per day. If they miss a day they have to get 20 and so on, and if you have 2 horses, then you have to get 20 each day etc .....

Ask them to do just ONE barrow each a day which takes 10 minutes! Hopefully they have 10 minutes spare to clear the field and they will see all the benefits mentioned in above posts.

I find it quite therapeutic and the dog loves it too. Running around playing with her ball. Like someone said, spending time with the horses and seeing them just being horses is lovely.
