First of all, before anyone jumps on me, I spoke to my Vet yesterday, and they are coming to see her on Monday, as they didn't feel the situation yesterday warranted an immediate visit...

But.. she is worse today, and i don't want to pester them on the weekend if i'm just being an over-reactive mummy (which i am prone to doing) :o

On Thursday morning, I noticed she was 'off colour', had hardly eaten any hay, but she wolfed down her breakfast, and so I put her out. Thursday pm, still quieter than usual, but again ate her tea like normal, I took her temp, slightly raised, but nothing serious/alarming. Friday am, bright yellow snot coming from her right nostril! but she was completely back to her usual cheeky bright self, temp still slightly raised. This is when I spoke to vet. We discussed that it could be teething problems (she's 3 rising 4, had her teeth done in November and was noted that a couple of adult back teeth still to come through), or a bit of a virus, but as not got a very high temp, not to worry, but they are coming to see her on Monday.

This morning, the bright (fluorescent) yellow/green snot is a constant stream from her right nostril, but she is perfectly fine in herself, still not eating much hay, but hard feed and grass are fine.

She also now has a touch of mud fever :(

Do you think the above warrants an emergency weekend call out? Or should I just sit tight until Monday?

It's only my 2 at the yard, so I have no one else horsey to chat to about her :(

Thank you snowflake, that's the kind of sense i need to hear, I'm sure my panicky moments are funding the vet's early retirement... They've often said to me 'you know this could have waited til Monday'

She's eating grass happily in the field, and eating her hard feed am and pm, and although she's not eating much hay overnight, she's happily coming in and by the looks of her bed is spending most of the night flat out sleeping (which is quite normal for her). Poo's are normal, she's drinking normally and her coat is nice and shiny (except her poor legs)

If she was really seriously ill she'd look ill. If she's bright and happy it won't be that bad. Your vet could be thinking a tooth abscess draining from the sinus. The infection would be in her body hence the raised temperature and mud fever. I would treat the mud fever, keep cleaning up the snot and make sure she's eating enough fibre if she's not wanting hay. Feed from floor level to help the mucous drain out. Whatever the cause, I hope your mare makes a swift recovery.

Then she sounds fine to me :)

It's not uncommon to get little colds and viruses this time of year.

Sounds like you keep her flu jabs up to date. If she's not coughing so much it interferes with work or you're skidding on snot every time you enter the stable it's probably not too bad.

Take her temp if you can. It should be 100.5 Fahrenheit but they can all vary slightly.

:)

Agree with SFD. It does sound like it's tooth/sinus and as long as she's eating, drinking, pooing and weeing you should be fine until Monday but if she stops doing any of these then I'd be ringing the vet again.
Of course, it could be something in the hay that's turning her off but that wouldn't account for the snot of course.

As to the MF, don't wash it, brush the dry mud off then apply Protocon in a circular motion; do that for a couple of days, cream on top of old cream and the scabs should start peeling off themselves; it's always easier on the horse to rub/massage in a circular fashion rather than up or down or across but don't pick at them as that would make her sore. If you wash them you run the risk of losing the valuable oils in her skin and they actually do help in the repair so don't wash them away!

My old mare has a sinus infection and had it operated on last year. Not comparing to yours but just saying it made her not quite herself. Eating feed but not hay, still happy to go out but had thick snot....all over stable door, me, feed buckets etc. Sure yours will be fine until monday. Just keep an eye on temperature incase its something else.

Thank you for all of your replies - i feel much happier!

I always feed from the floor so that should be helping, and yes her flu/tet vaccines are all up to date and have been for ever as she was a flat racehorse before I had her. Her temp has been around 101 - 101.5 which the vet said yesterday is to be expected and not an immediate worry. She's not coughing either, just snorting the snot out of the way sometimes - and yes - it is getting everywhere!!

She is nearly OK in herself, (still capable of a good buck and skit around when I brought her in last night) i think she just needs some good antibiotics! I've never seen snot in such a bright, vibrant colour!!

Thank you again for the sensible replies... I can turn these things into impending disaster in my head :D
