Well you certainly aren't to blame for that. She had a bad cut that completely accounted for lameness, and no other symptoms. I don't think many people in that situation would think to go looking for an abscess in the foot.

You did spot it - you were concerned without really any reason to be despite a wound already checked by a vet, you know your horse pretty damn well

I think you can be forgiven for not thinking there might be an abscess on the same leg as an injury!
