I am 5ft4/5, currently 9st5 (normally 9stone and hopefully once I'm mucking out every day will return to my optimal weight!!).

I have looked at a pony- thought he was going to be 14.3hh but was more like 14/14.1hh. Will I squish him?

He was a native- nfx and a new forest sort of build.

I have no worries about the odd ride on something that size but for riding everyday, dressage/ schooling, the odd long hack, potentially hunting next year- will we be ok?

I used to ride ponies of this size all the time and had great fun but was probably a stone lighter then.

I should think you would be absolutely fine, unless pony is very old or has very bad conformation!
I'm about 5'6" and 9.5st and had a 14hh welsh D cross and she managed just fine, did everthing and could probably have carried quite a bit more. :)

I rode my 14.1hh pony up until I was 5'6/7 and up to 9/10st and he carried me comfortably for everyday riding:) He was also quite fine, I think that pony would have no bother with you. Hope I helped a bit:)

Yes- thanks!
He really fits the bill otherwise but can't quite get it out of my head that he would be too small...
If I were to have him I would make a conscious effort to get back down to 9 stone (not hard considering how little exercise I am currently doing!) but I have no desire to weigh any less than that!

I'm having a similar dilemma regarding a pony I viewed yesterday. I too will lose weight once I'm horsing every day.

He sounds lovely for you though.

I'm 5ft2 and Herbie is only 12.2hh ish. :) Foresters can be quite chunky and they say they can carry one stone per hand so you should be fine on a 14.1hh. They were are after all origonaly bred to carry men across the forest all day ;P

I'm 5'6, roughly the same weight as you, and my new boy is 14hh. I feel a bit low to the ground(!), but he'd carry that and more without a problem :)

I compete, event and hunt my 14.1 connemara. I'm 5ft 6" and hover between 8st7lb and 9st. He's never failed me and not once have I ever heard anyone say that I'm too big for him.

If you comfortable, why go any bigger? Nothing worse than feeling over-horsed, especially out hunting.

This is a reassuring thread indeed. I've been drawn to adverts for 13.2 ponies and am a similar height and weight to the OP. thanks everyone!
