My girl had her flu jab yesterday and i popped her out this morning and noticed she was very quiet.

I didnt think much of it at the time but when i came back in from turning her out i noticed her bed hadnt been disturbed much, her breakfast hadnt gone, her water bucket was more of less full and she had hardly touched her hay!!!!

The penny then dropped so i walked out to the field and checked the injection site and there was a small swelling.

I have been to see her tonight and she has eaten her tea so i gave her a sloppy feed at 8.30 which she ate.

She still isnt right tho and is a bit dehydrated as her skin is taking 3-4 seconds to recover from the pinch test and the corners of her eyes are sunken like when she had an op last summer.

She is meant to have a chiro visirt tomo but i have given her a danilon this eve so will ask the chiro if she wants to leave her of treat her becuse of the bute in her system.

The jab site seems less swollen tonight so its gone down but she isnt right still.

Has anyone experienced this of similar and how long were your horses like it for?. Im thinking if she still unwell tomo i should ring the vets to let them know.

its quite common for them to have a low grade reaction to the jab and it varies as to how long they rake to get over it ,but they can react quite badley too ,my friends horse was at leighurst the other year after he reacted really badley to it he pulled through but was touch and go for a while ,ring your vet and let him put your mind at rest ,most horses are fine after a few days hope yours gets well soon

Yes my boy is not right for up to 3 days afterwards. I just give him 4 days off now whenever he is jabbed as he gets quite grumpy and miserable and stiff in his legs. And the site of his injection has become swollen too but usually goes down after a day.

yes, had horse done in 1st week in jan and he was off for a week because of a sore swollen neck.

friends horse got jabbed at same time and he could not get up the nxt morning - it simply hurt to much. he was off for 2 weeks. was on very heavy painkillers and v.v.v swollen neck

She seemd mucm much brighter yesterday just still a little dehydrated but her eyes were less sunken and she went through my pockets for carrots hehe.

Im hoping she is back to normal today and might go for a little hack around the block just to get her out.

I have never had that before and i knew there could be a mild reaction but im just a worrypot as we have been to hall and back the last year.

Its a relief to know that others have had the same.

Mine had a nasty reaction when she was jabbed in the chest. She ended up with a huge swelling and lost all her co-ordination, it was quite scarey, the vet advised a course of bute and she was right as rain within two days.

Yes, don't worry too much about it but give lots of TLC. Dizzy had a really bad reaction this year with very large swelling on injection site on neck, extremely down in the dumps, off his food etc. Rang the vet in a panic and he was his usual calm self, assuring me it would all settle down within 4-5 days at most. As you did, I gave him Danilon and he recovered fine.

Hi Claire!!!

Poor Peli, and poor you!! It is quite common with vaccines for animals to react. It doesn't sound severe so don't worry too much. One of my huskies reacted to a vaccine (her eyes went all funny). It looked nasty but she was fine after a couple of days.
