Recalling away from other dogs - help needed!

Last year i bought my first ever dog he is a jrt x chihuahua and although i have very limited dog knowledge his training has been a piece of cake - he is always off the lead (except nr busy roads) waits at kerbs, sit, stay, paw etc BUT as soon as he says another dog it all goes out of the window - i have an extendable lead and ive been trying to teach him not to belt off over to them when they are in sight but im at a total dead end - you can see him just go spare with excitement he cant contain himself and he goes from being a super attentive well behaved dog to totally deaf to my instructions - even if he sees a fox its the same.
ANY help or suggestions gratefully received!

You could try joining a group training class, so he starts to learn that other dogs don't always mean playtime? Mind you, I'm no expert, Henry is a sod for that as well

My trainer told me that when he's on the lead and you meet other dogs, keep on going and don't let him stop, and if other people bring their dogs over, ask them not to and explain he's in training. Then when he can walk past calmly you can let them stop and have a sniff.

Thanks spudlet - i thought about that aswell and there is a dog training class held at my stables aswell maybe its worth a try!

As suggested training class would be a great start, and also reinforcing his recall with some juicy goodies and an aid, so maybe whistle and hot dogs/chicken breast, use a long line as opposed to a extendy and let him go to the end and recall/whistle and treat when he gets to you, and let him go wonder off again to the end of the lead and recall/whistle again and treat.

Harley was taught at dog training not to charge up to dogs (by using a slightly grumpy bitch! ). So he approaches slowly which generally keeps him out of trouble. I know what distance I can recall him from (if he gets very close to them and call him I have no hope. I am working on it!). So keep my eye out.

To get him back though I keep walking in the opposite direction. I know he'll choose me over the other dogs no matter how good the game! Usually he'll come pretty quickly and I don't get far!
