Basically my mare has always been very evasive of the contact. She doesn't like poll pressure and she doesn't like single joints.
I have her in a cottage craft bit with a lozenge, its like a cheaper version of a NS bit. But she finds it too thick. She gets her tongue over the bit and I am presuming its because she find it too thick and feels she can't swallow.
After looking at another bit thred in here I went on a website and found this bit which seems be ideal and has a 30 day trial. Will it do the trick? Does anyone else ride in this bit or can reccoment me something similar?

Thanks guys

I've just ordered the team up bit from these guys - should be here today :-) My horse hated the starter bit due to it's shape. I would ring NS and have a chat with them - they're soooo helpful. If your horse is getting her tongue over the bit it may be too low...

and have a good look in your horses mouth to get an idea of how much space there is. Having had a horse with a very fat tongue I did struggle to find a bit he was happy in and ended up (finally) with a loose ring NS with a losenge 16mm. Very interested in how this bit would work though? Once you have spoken to NS, could you post it back on the forum? I am really interested in bitting and am working my way around different bits with my new horse atm - sticking with a larger version of what my previous horse worked in as he seems OK, but teeth are being sorted out next week and I will see after that.

Thanks guys I will give NS a ring. :)
My mare has a very thick tongue so the space in her mouth isn't alot. The bit is where it should be, if anything slightly high but no matter where I put it she tries to get her tongue over it. I borrowed a NS wilkie off someone and she stopped the tongue thing so I am presuming its the size of mouthpiece she is concerned with. Shes a very fussy mare.. She came in a hanging cheek and a grackle pasted onto her face and all the grackle did was hide the fact that she hated the bit!!!
Thanks again for your input :D

I can recommend the verbindend. Have a fussy in the mouth mare and had tried lots of bits and nosebands and the verbindend has worked out the one for her. She has a fleshy mouth and largeish Tongue.

You need a slim bit, I moved from NS starter to a Myler Cheekpiece snaffle after a year, he has a normal size mouth, but the independent action of the Myler has worked a treat, also anyone else can ride him and it acts as any normal bit. I lie the NS aurigon for youngsters, but obviously it will be useless if too thick for him.

MrsD123, I know what you mean. She just has a small mouth because her tongue and cheeks are so fleshy. Shes fussy with a contact anyway as I think she was ridden with quite a harsh contact in the past. I have managed to get hold of a NS Verbiend off the Bit Bank website with a 30 day trial, so if she doesn't like it I will try a Myler bit next time :)

I can totally recommend the verbindend bit, for the 4 years I've had George I never found a bit for dressage that he was truly comfortable with, until I found this. My boy is a shire x with fleshy lips, big tongue and low palate and this really suits him, I always thought he didn't like lozenge bits and rode him in a straight bar - but I have been so pleased since using this bit :) I still have to work really hard with him, but it helps so much.

I have tried just about everything else in this mare too! She is just so fussy in the mouth and tbh I don't know a horse which doesn't go well in the NS bits! Plus if she doesn't like it I can try something else! I really want to progress up the dressage levels with this mare but I can't until she is happy in her mouth (everything has been checked and is up to date!)

Bloody horses eh! ;)

I'm a massive fan of the NS losange shape mouth piece, it suits my flabby mouthed cob perfectly. Still working on finding a bit that works him perfectly but I'm reluctant to move away from the mouth piece because after years of searching it's the one he seems to accept very happily.

Thanks guys, hopefully its worth the money!
My last mare was happy in one of those Happy mouth bits with a penut roller in it, a little cheap bit but she loved it! So spending over £40 (inc P+P) on a bit is rather daunting for me! The bit arrived this morning so hopefully when I try it tonight it works!

Think yourself lucky...I tried a Myler at over £100 which worked for a bit (no pun intended), then moved to the NS and the one I've got is again over £100!!!! Thank goodness for ebay that's all I can say!!!

^^^^.....I tried every bit in the book- and the NS verbindend is the one my highland doesn't stick his tongue over. I tried a myler too- no good. Plus it looked awful.

I also use NS verbindend on my arab- he cannot stand poll pressure either- he just explodes, and he will take a contact in this rather than just waving his head around:rolleyes:

Hope you get on with it ok, but in case you don't... I had very similar problems with my boy and the ONLY one he's ever been happy in is the Myler mullen mouth, it's very thin so gives plenty of room for his enormous (and slightly deformed) tongue. I have the hanging cheek version as he sticks his nose out but there are all sorts of different cheek pieces. When we need brakes he has a waterford - as it's flexible it seems to mould around his tongue rather than restriciting it.

Deffo recommend Myler, I have one with the tongue port for my mare as she's half Clydesdale and has a huge tongue!! She's much happier with it, hope you get sorted.
