can anyone reccomend me a saddle for a very wide flat backed cob shes coming this weekend from a sancuary and altho iv got a month with the borrowed saddle im wondering what saddle to get, i dont plan on showing so its just for hacking and mebe the odd local event any ideas

Hi. I had the same problem, have a wide backed cob from World Horse Welfare. I got a local saddler to come out with lots of second hand saddles and we tried the ones that fitted to see which one suited me and horse the best.

i had a Thorowgood xxw for my last horse (Clydesdale x cob) and can't sing it's praises enough.

It was comfy to ride on and you can change the gullets really easily if your cob changes shape.

They cost about £350 new but you can get second hand ones off Ebay cheaper.

They do up to xxxw!!!!

Thorowgood also do a cob saddle pad that has an antislip grip pad to stop your saddle from slipping which is common on round, flat backed horses.

i was thinking of those with adjustable gullet as shes very overweight at the minute and i cant really afford a new one everytime she changes shape, iv never used one of these any info good or bad?

Have a look at the newer Thorowgood range - they do changable gullet ones now (do be careful though - only the newest ones have them, not all, do double check). Their cob range suits most wide flat horses well.

Or you could look at decent treeless saddles - they work very well on wide flat horses and with the correct padding will fit most horses. They would be perfect if she's going to slim down dramatically. Some are better than others (loads out there) and you usually get what you pay for. Most are less traditional looking but some look exactly like tree'd saddle (they're more expensive though). My friend has the heather moffet saddle (one of the most expensive) and it's brilliant for her cob. I have a freeform which I LOVE riding in but it's no great for horses who have withers.

I prefer Saddle Company for extra wide horses and found them to work well on Highland ponies - you would need a local SC fitter though, they are multi adjustable but need the right equipment

Another vote for treeless saddles, I have a wide, no withered flat back cob and the local saddler admited defeat when he tried to fit her with a treed saddle.
So we went down the treeless route and have never looked back, it's true you get what you pay for, but that's true with treed saddles too. They're great if your horse is going to change shape due to fitness or weight loss.
I have tried a few treeless saddles of various prices and settled with a Total Saddle Solution GP saddle, I got it second hand via ebay, it was expensive, but well worth it.

thorowgood cob , definitely worth a look at. Mine is sooooooo comfy and sooooo easy to look after. I use a polypad under it, a thorowgood cob girth, and slip-ye-not :D sm x

Ideal, Fylde etc all do show saddles for flat withered horses and ponies - they are the saddles specifically built for the broader beast. If you don't want a straight cut showing saddle, the working hunter version would probably suit you. They are expensive new, but second hand are a little cheaper. The plus point isthat they hold their value really well and you are pretty much guaranteed to get your money back should you ever decide to sell the saddle on.

I have a Griffin saddle by thorowgood for one Welsh Cob and a wintec wide for my very board Welsh Cob. Not too keen on the Wintec as I find it 'throws' me forward. I also have a Wintec Isabel Dressage saddle - which I LOVE and both cobs work well in it too. xx

I had a Wintec wide on my gypsy cob! i'm not a fond fan of synthetic saddles but i found this was great as i worked my boy and he changed shape i was able to change the shape of the saddle with out changing saddles. i now have a xwide barnesby. but i've kept my wintec wide and it's been on many other horses including a flat backed roly poly horse! just change the gullet and away you go! but a gullet measure from wintec is a must to ensure a correct fit!:)

I've got a Thoroughgood T4 Cob GP saddle for my Section D and its great. Comes with changeable gullet and the Fish system. I also use it with a wintec non-slip girth and a non slip numnah.

I bought mine from Ebay for around £200 - however, I knew it was a good shape for him and I've had it checked by a saddler.

Can also recommend the Wintec Wide saddles, they are comfy and adjustable, have got 2 of them for our various shaped cobs....

I also have a wintec and its really comfy. Got mainly because she needs to put on weight but she's a irish draught x cob so still wide and fits fine. Would get a saddle fitter to check on any saddle you buy though.
