After numerous badly fitting saddle i have decided to give up on trees and try out treeless saddles- but i know there are some very bad ones which can cause back problems- due to the stirrup straps i believe?

I want something i can jump in comfortably (me and the horse!) as i noticed they look quite western style mostly, unless they are £2000- which i cant really afford atm :(

I love the more english style ones but they seem to be very expensive, if there is a decent cheaper version id like to know !

Pony has uneven shoulders due to an old injury compensation and the saddles with trees,

any ideas/advice welcome. I could probably spend up to £1000 if need be, but id really rather keep it around £500-£600 mark at max! as i'd be skint if i spent £1000 ! (student with no job here!)

We looked at treeless for our cob and the saddler told us you can't jump in a treeless. Don't know if that's completely right as I don't see why not! My ID has a gfs saddle which is comfy and looks great but didn't break the bank even brand new think it was about £700. And we settled on a thoroughgood cob saddle for the other one coz there cut in on the shoulders underneath so it doesn't restrict movement. Only thing is it's synthetic but looks really good it's not really plasticy like some synthetics and that was £280 I think

Oh thats odd, i've seen eventers using them ! but top of the range ones of course, i have a crosby softride on her atm and it really doesnt fit, better than the last one - a wintec which left huge white marks despite 'fitting perfectly'.

If i go on the left rein i have to stop every 10 mins and nudge the saddle over to the left again as it slips to the right- even though i try and put my weight in the left stirrup to compensate ! really a nightmare- and it slips all the way up on to the withers and squashes them.

i do like the thoroughgood saddles but as i said, treed saddles dont seem to be working out so far and i've tried a lot !

I have two and both cost (second hand) under £1000.

I have a freeform which is a solid based treeless saddle. It would be suitable to do smallish jumps in i am sure. I find it very balanced and safe to ride in.

I have recently bought a second hand GP heather moffatt saddle (they are about 500-700 second hand off the enlightened equitation website or ebay) but ive not jumped in it yet.

As I say not sure how right the no jumping thing is it's just what my saddler said when he came to fit our cob. Suppose expensive ones might be more designed for jumping. Anyway if you weren't wanting a brand new one I'd suggest goin to a good saddler or trying a few and tell them the problem as they'll have a few different second hand ones you can loan to try. One of mine even does that with brand new ones. They get in demo saddles and if it suits you buy it if not it goes back

have a look at the total solutions website about jumping they have pics of people ode! for your price i would try a couple you can rent for a couple of weeks or so. then you can see which you prefer and then keep an eye out on ebay

:)

Thanks for the replies, just having a good look at different types- basically the idea is to steer clear of the stirrups which have a strap over the back like torsion saddles i believe-

Think i could get maybe £400 for my crosby, think its about £1200 new and in good condition just faded- also with added girth straps ! so that will be a good chunk off, what counts as small jumps? i jump up to 3ft- no bigger under any circumstances now after tendon injury

Is a bit hard to spend more on the saddle than the horse is worth ;) .. well after her injury ! ah well she worth it to me haha
