For the winter I need to plan what I am going to feed Buffy!
She is a 16.1hh Warmblood.
She wintered well last year but that was on very good hayledge. This year we are on hay and the quality is inconsistent. Its usually mid-poor quality. I soak it to kill off the dist spores.
However last year on the Hayledge she wintered on Bran and Hi Fi lite.
She is now just on the Hi Fi lite.
I need a feed that is simple (I don't trust these mixes, but oats would be faaar too much for her!) and that will keep a nice amount of weight on her without fizzing her up. She has alot of natural energy ;)
She has been on Barley in the past but that blew her brains a bit. She would be put on oats but I suspect she would be quite.. "elated" on oats, not uncontrollable, just too much energy! Sugarbeet isn't always an option as it freezes over before she has finished her tea when its mid winter! She gets it when its warm enough..
So what feed can I give her along side the Hi Fi lite, that will maintain her weight without blowing her brains?

Ta :D

ETA: She is mainly used for hacking and schooling. Schooled 4/5 times a week for 45mins/1hr including attempted (;)) lateral work and trot/canter work. Hacked once a week for an hour or so.

I would really recommend Calm and Condition, it's fantastic. It keeps the condition on my 19yr old Standardbred but without fizzing him up (he's a loon at the best of times, in a good way, so doesn't need anymore fizz).

Stick to straights. You know whats going in, and what its doing!
Tried soaked oats?
Yes occasionally the odd one will have a "moment" on them, but I find barley much worse! Oats seems to be a bit better on the fizz front.
Change the hifi for alpha a oil maybe?
One of my "skinnies" is on Alpha a oil, bailey's conditioning cubes and oats/barley (depending on how much fizz I want!) plus adlib hay in winter and she does very well on it.

Oh Buffy is by no means skinny, or a poor doer. But I feel that since she has gone from good quality high calorie forage to.. cr*p (:D) I need to suppliment it.
How long do you soak the oats for because I am of your opinion about the straights!
What does soaking the oats do to them? Does it make it more digestable?
My last TB was on Oats and Alfalfa for winter and she always looked amazing. But she was much more chilled

I use Blue Chip and some form of chaff, usually safe and sound. I tend to use the lamilite for the fatties and the original for the youngsters. The competition horse goes on Pro in the comp season. They all look fab and it makes like easy.

Either add a balancer (I use lo-cal really helps to keep my horse well), balancers are great at helping them get the most out of their forage.

OR

Fibre nuts. We are looking for an ex-racer at the moment for my mum and have been to the charities. They feed all their charges fibre nuts and hay. They can feed lots of them and not worry about temprement or metabolic disorders and all their horses looked fantastic, fat actually and the TB's to be rehomed are all worked every day and look fab.

Or if you want to stick with straights use a more calorific chaff like readigrass or Alfa, add a splash of oil and kwickbeet :)
