Am looking for a new Heavyweight rug, thought would be good to get one now as there usually cheaper/on sale at this time of year. Pickle currently has 2 "vintage" Fal-Pro's. So reccommendations of a good heavyweight rug, budget of up to £80. Must NOT have a fixed neck as I don't want/nned a rug with a neck.

I quite liked the look of the Mark Todd Coolex any thoughts on this.

I have a Mark Todd Heavyweight Combo (not what you want I know), and I LOVE it! Would recommend the MT rugs!

masta and weathabeeta ranges are good now and no neck or detachanecks should be in ur budget, they both seem to fit well on the range of horses/ponies on my yard that wear them....
also maybe look on ebay for a rambo as they are amazing but more than £80 new so secondhand could be the way to go with that..

i have no experience of MT rugs sorry

I love the Mark Todd rugs too, bought one about 5/6 years ago and its still going strong and looks as good as new once washed (think its been re-proofed a couple of times in this time) - havent a clue what 'model' it is, but its the heaviest rug i have, kept my wimpy old TB mare snug even in the coldest weather.

I bought a Fal stable rug off ebay (a real one, not a knock off) and can now see why they're expensive, it's a really really good rug. Maybe look out for a sale or ebay one if you know they fit well already?

For turnouts my fav is weathabeeta, but that's mainly because of the fit, but they do last (no broken straps, leaks, tears etc.) and is nice and cosy.

I have a big, stocky horse ('traditionally built' my vet says!) like Pickle, she is 7' rug size and I actually found that the Mark Todd ones didn't fit her very well. It was quite restricting around the chest and because of the 'smallness' around the chest it had to be fastened higher up the neck than normal. (MT are good rugs and the 5'9 one for my old pony was wonderful, I think just for bigger built horses they don't fit as well as others)

I found Shires fit her well and are very good value for money - I have had mine for 3 years and it's still 100% waterproof etc. Saxon also fitted well but I found this not so hardwearing. Rambo also fit perfectly but they are expensive.

Hope this helps.

I love my Aerborn rugs - I have a MW with no neck for both girls, and a HW full neck, plus a HW no neck stable rug. Mine had all lasted for ages.

Think DD is right about the fit of MT rugs - they're the best fit of all on my QH which has a dainty neck and big shoulders (tho the darts on her fly rug rub a bit

) so not ideal for big necks/chests. But fab rugs!

AH may avoid the mark todd rugs, have seen weatherbeta's on some horses with huge chests and found those are not always ideal.

Anyone have experience of Bucas Rugs?

I know you say they are out of your budget but I would definately have a look on ebay etc for a second hand Rambo mine cost £200 but i've had it 3 years and has fitted 3 horses that have been shaped very differently. My WB used to destroy 3 rugs a season so in the end it wasn't any dearer if that makes sense? I've got cheap rugs for local free ads so might be worth a look there?

Both of mine have big chests and I find the Shires rugs fit really well - very little in the way of rubs by the end of the winter. I have just bought my two matching his and hers Shires lw turnouts - my mares old Shires rug finally died after about 15 years!! - and am very impressed by the sizing and finish on them (I was concerned it may not be so good). They are a really generously cut/fit rugs and not the most expensive.

The other hw rug I got as an emergency purchase last year when I got my boy was a Riff Raff rug from ebay - worth looking at - the quality and detail is very good and if the Shires hadn't been on sale I would have looked there or Premier Equine. PE again are good quality and a generous fit.

No experience of Buccas turnout rugs but coolers and stable rugs are fab, otherwise i am FAL/Rambo all the way for heavy weight rugs.

I have got a mark top rug for my heavy weight cob and his chest is about 2 ft wide and that fits him perfect as i usually find it hard to find one that fits him round his shoulders as they usually rub him

I like the Mark Todd rugs and my mare has a weatherbeeta orican, which is fab. Equestrian clearance have some good value rugs.

My youngster has a weatherbeeta orican which is a fantastic rug, has stood up to 2 winters of serious abuse and never slipped, leaked or rubbed! You can also get a detatchable neck for it if you decide you need one!
