receding gums

My horse has a slightly twisted front tooth. This means food is being packed in around it. I am cleaning this food out every day with a nail brush and salt water as advised by the dentist. The thing is the gums are receding . Anybody know if there is anything else that I can do or if there is anything the dentist can do in which case I’ll get them back sooner than planned.
