Hi

We have a three year old gelding at our yard who was cut 6 weeks ago. He came to our yard a week ago and was turned out with the owners fillies.

He has been spotted by two seperate people having full intercourse with the pony fillies.

Is 6 weeks generally too soon to be in mixed company? I don't know anything about it really, but obviously the owner is worried.

The vet who cut him seemed to think he would be ok in mixed company within a couple of weeks of the op.

Any advice gratefully received.

Will also post in breeding!

Jo

When the colts are cut where I keep my horses they are turned out in mixed company almost straight away and they're fine. Over the years I've only known one colt out of about 15 to try and cover the mares but it definitely wasn't 'full intercourse'.
Sorry I can't be of much help, but I wouldn't think he would be having full intercourse with the fillies unless he hasn't been gelded properly.

I thought 6 weeks was fine. My mare spent all last summer shagging her gelding friend (she would chase him round the field backwards till be obliged)!!!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but geldings CAN still have full intercourse (especially if the mare is obliging!!!)..............Even when they HAVE been gelded properly!!!!!

Yes they can, is rather embarassing when you haven't even had chance to get the headcollar off and they're at it!

TBH if they don't have shoes or rugs on and are of similar size (so no pony squashing going on), I wouldn't worry.................let them have their fun!!!!!

I had to take my mare away from her gelding friend as HE got fed up with her attention and started to kick her when SHE wouldn't take no for an answer!!!!

At three I would have thought that he would need keeping away from the mares for some months. Our neighbour was advised to keep hers away for six months.

i own a rig gelding who is exactly the same as this...theres nothing we can do except keep him away from mares! it could be that your colt is also a rig, in which case yes, he will always be like this as far as i know!

6 weeks is fine, my vet usually says they can go out with fillies after 4.my boy was gelded last year and he still trys it on with mare and one gelding that he has taken quite a fancy too lol
