My colt was gelded on monday, since then its been smooth goings tbh ive been very lucky to be able to say the vet advised the procedure went perfectly (he had an apprentice with him too) and since then the healing has gone well.

The only thing that has got me the swelling seemed to have gone down but since yesterday although there is still a small hole so does weep a little if he nocks it, It has now swolen up to the stage its almost as if his little boy bits have grown back! there is no heat in it, and sadly has to be in during the day due to a mare being on the yard, so isnt helping! it does go down when he is out at night.

Should i worry? Im not sure if this is normal for it to swell on the last stage of healing?

I'm sure it's perfectly normal. I've had two colts gelded and they couldn't have been more different.
One it took two weeks from open to close (excuse the pun!). He had no problems other than the odd baby running around moment which opened it slightly but he was never very swollen at all although it came and went depending on the amount of moving he did and then the other had a major infection and it took nearly 6 weeks to close. He was cut late and should really have gone under but the charity who I fostered him for insisted he was done in the field and the vets were fairly incompetent (whole different story!).

Anyway... long story short he was swollen for a very long time and had 3 lots of anti b's. However his bits were very warm and swollen and he was uncomfortable on it.

Both were out 24/7 post op in October with no real mud to speak of.

If the swelling goes down it's probably normal. Have a call and talk to your vet or nurse if you're worried and i'm sure they'll reassure you. If you're worried give him a bit of bute/danilon overnight when he's in to help reduce the inflammation as both are NSAIDS.

Hope that helps - sorry if I wittered!!! ;)

No you have done exacly what i wanted! i needed some one to go all hell bails in to it!

Im new to cutting horses, initially i wanted to keep him a stallion as he is so well tempered but he has been cut at 3 so im so pleased its gone well, we have had no anti biotics given to us nor bute! (i was shocked about this) and he hasnt been too sore tbh, hes been a bit stiff at the start but was happy to canter around playing with his field friend ruin! so quite pleased with it!

i expect mr ruin will be the opposit as he gave the vet a run for his money with just a tetnus jab! lol :D (i did laugh though i couldnt help it!)

The scrotum on one of my guys swelled up quite a bit after he was cut as a weanling a few years ago.

I took photos each day so that I could objectively assess whethe the swelling was going down or up.

It went from being the size of a walnut or thereabouts, up to the size of my fist at its largest. I remember phoning the vet as I was quite worried, but they didn't seem at all phased by the size the swelling had got to.

Having said that, I'm sure it's definitely worth keeping an eye on, and the general guidelines seem to be to allow/encourage movement as much as possible.

My little man took 2 weeks for the swelling to go down on one side looked like he had grown one huge testicle, and i too was worried. He was done about this time last year. He dripped very watery blood on and off for a week. I spoke to my vet after 4 days and she said not to worry unless he was dripping steady red blood or looked unwell.
