I make fly repellant with vinegar, neem oil, cirtronella oil, tea tree oil, avon skin so soft - then top it up with water. I would check that your horse isn't sensitive to any of the essential oils as they can cause a skin reaction. OH mare has this recipe but without citronella used in the mix as when using it each day it causes her to become sensitive around her midline and teats.

I don't make treats as ours don't really get them. A well done and pat is suficient when they have done well or tried. Occasionally they do get some carrot peelings in their tea, they love them!!

My recipe for Fly spray that I have used for the last 7 or so years, always seems to work well.
I teasppon washing up liquid.
2 tablespoons methalated spirit.
15 mls citronella oil.
4 tablespoons vinegar.
1 mug strong cold tea.
mix together and top up with 2 litres of cold water.

Hi Matt. No use on treats I'm afraid. Just to let you know there's a sticky in the yard and stable forum with about 50 posts on for repellant recipes :D

We used to use a mixture of strong cold black tea, distilled vinegar, citronella oil and a dollop of washing up liquid to emulsify. Mixture put into a spray bottle and applied once or twice a day when flies are bad. For around their eyes, I'd use a proprietory gel (just incase of any allergy or eye irritation was caused by the home-made recipe).

ok thanks just looked at it and have made mine ready, i used:

1.5 litres strong black tea
cap washing up liquid
cap dettol
about 2/3 cup vinegar

hope it works although wont need it for a while yet!!!

Recipe 10:
Take a large lemon and slice thinly. Place in a bowl with a few sprigs of rosemary and cover both in boiling water. Allow to soak overnight and strain the mixture the following morning. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake before applying. A similar response seems to be had by doing the same with leaves, stems and flowers from Elder bushes. (Slipping flowering elder twigs through your horse's brow band can also act as a fly repellent.)

I make horse treats at christmas with stuff from the kitchen.

2 grated carrots
2 grated apples
2 tbsp porridge/readybrek
2 tbsp black treacle (molasses will do)
2 tbsp veg oil
salt
sprinkling of flour
and anything else your horse likes - mine gets the contents of a peppermint teabag and a couple of rosehip teabags mixed in.

Mix it up, adding flour if it is too runny, and splat handfuls on a greased baking tray. Cook for about half an hour at about 180. Then leave to cool and they harden up.
They taste quite nice actually!
