Hi
I have two natives - one aged 6 the other 26 . The live out 24/7 on natural pasture with plenty of grass virtually all year but hay when needed. I have never given supplements of any kind although the older one has pony nuts and sugar beet in the winter months. They both have carrots and apples fairly often. The 6 year old is a very good doer . The older one will not touch a salt lick although the younger will and there is one available all the time but usage is minimal.

Several people have been aghast that I give no supplements- they both look well although the older does have summer asthma/ COPD and I have tried various "breatheasy" type potions ( none tried have worked only ventapulmin works). both are barefoot with good feet although the 6 year old has had a few cracks with the hard ground this summer.

Would appreciate your thoughts on whether I should give a supplement and if so which one.
Thanks

if their feet are good and they look well in their coats then I'd not worry. I started my two on a supp earlier this year as I felt they could be better in their coats-could have been the awful spring that we had though.

except that they tout it as high in iron which is generally not helpful for most UK grazing, it;s a shame they don't actually put a full spec on their website.

(ps not seen you for ages!)

OP - if they look well and are fit & able for their jobs - leave it be! The horse feed industry predicates itself on the idea that you "must" feed something or other. Balancers, Calmers, potions for this or that. Horses have survived for centuries without. That is not to say that there are not specific situations where science really helps - absolutely. But if it ain't broke - don't waste your money on it!
