A dealer is someone who sell 3 or more items that are the same in a year. And the tax man does scan adverts and checks phone numbers to keep an eye on people - as obviously they want their cut if you are dealing.
You are also a dealer if your main source of income is from horses, ie you train and sell 1 horse a year.
The worse we have ever been stiched up over a horse is from a private PC home, so I do prefer dealers, but be careful when you are buying something older as they might have problems.
I havent brought from them, but someone on our yard was looking at horses a couple of mnths ago, and they were all nice animals, as described. They just seemed like nice people??!!
Not much more to add except as long as you try the horse in every situation, on different occasions, have them vetted and do everything you want to do with them on the trial, then make your decision on that, not whether someone is a dealer or private.
I used to work at a point to point/hunting yard and in the summer we would buy youngsters, either break or bring them on and resell them, these were always quality horses for fair prices, and we never had one person come back and complain.
Yes she was a TRAINER, being a very good point to point jockey and horse trainer, but as she was buying and selling, that also make her a DEALER!
So what, the horses were well cared for (I used to care for them so now this LOL), and very happy, as were the new owners.
Too much stigma is attached to the word 'dealer' at the end of the day a lot of it is common sense, sure there are exceptions but if you know what you are looking for you will know if a dealer or private person is filling you full of lies.
Joan Willets, Seecham Equestrian Center, Alvchurch. I have know Joan for nearly 50 years, she is very straight, I have had many horses/ponies from her personally. You can tell her I personally recommended her to you, I personally don't deal, and I have nothing to gain from recommening Joan to you, just that she has always looked after people I have sent to her over the years. I have had no nasty come backs! Hope this helps, Linda
There ARE reputable dealers about. I know of one in Leicestershire who is a dealer in every sense of the word, but talks to you straight. If he doesnt think you're suitable for a horse he will tell you. I have seen a few animals of his, and they're all great. if you want his details, PM me.
Oh yes, and he does "ponies". lol

shes a producer - all the horses on her website are based in Germany and are produced by her business partner. They never have a horse less than two months. Dealers buy and sell like theres no tomorrow. Kay buys specialist horses for the job then trains them up so that she can sell to a more elite market.

A person who prepares food for a living is a cook, a person that does the same but charges more is called a chef. It's the same with DEALERS & PRODUCERS, one makes more profit per animal than the other.
They buy & sell horses for a living. They put in more schooling with them so they can make a greater profit. They sell to a more elitemarket..... They are UP MARKET DEALERS.
Well I bought Pidge from a dealer and I got his ISH papers, passport and a 30 day exchange, though because my friend had told him exactly what I wanted he was confident I wouldn't need it and how true he was. Pidge is fantastic and I can't fault the dealer I bought him from. I really don't think you should come out with such sweeping statements like this about dealers, people come on here for help and advice and comments like this don't help them at all!
i got my horse from a dealer doug aldrid but hes in preston still got her 8 yrs on he was great went to him as a last resort as couldnt find anything privatley and he was receomended by a number of people i went down told him what i wanted and he showed me 3 horses but got ebony out and said he thought she was the one tried her loved her streight away had her vetted and she came home 2 days later wouldnt swop her for the world. if i ever get another 1 i would go straight back to him
