The first that comes to mind is Blue chip but prob because its so often advertised, but does it work? Or are their others out there that are better?

We always feed Top Spec Anti Lam balancer because our horses are good doers. They do have lots of others as well and their helpline is good. Baileys Lo Cal is another good one.

I have used D&H Ultimate balancer and I was really impressed with the improvement in coat and hoof condition. Probably best for good doers though, my horse was a poor doer and the balancer needed too much feed added to keep his weight up making it rather expensive.

ETA I'm thinking about going back to it now I have a good doer.

I'm using Saracen Biolife 2000 - one cup a day into my 22 year old 16.3HH's dinner and he looks so much better for it! He was beginning to lose condition, but now is full of the joys of spring, has got a lovely gleam to his coat and is looking and feeling years younger!

I use Baileys low cal, it's worked brilliantly on my usually scrawny TB. He looks a picture and is calm on it as it's low in starch.

I used DandH ultimate balancer on my late TB mare as advised by their nutritionist and it wasn't good, she lost condition and went a bit bonkers on it. It just didn't suit her.

I haven't used blue chip but tbh I'm so happy with the low cal and it's so much cheaper I doubt I will ever try it.

Low cal has a bit less protein in it and less starch then other balancers. I feed Alfa a oil though with it which is also high in protein and horses can only process so much protein anyway before it just passes through their system.
Balancers aren't used for weight gain but too give them all the vits and mins, probiotics, biotin ect to help them utilise their other feed and make up any deficiencies in the diet.
Low cal really works for my TB, I don't know why it just does lol. Other balancers higher in protein (some have 30%!) just sent my old horse loopy which defeated the point of it as she stressed off her weight so I didn't try my current boy on those.
It's all a bit confusing! You may have to play around with a few different products to find out what works best for your horse :)

I tried Top Spec and Equilibrilum 500 and seen no difference, i tried them both for 4 months, I then put her on Blue Chip Pro and she looks amazing on it...! I swear by it.

My chap has been on Equilibra 500 (Got a very good deal on two bags at the equine fair) for about 6 weeks now and looks very well, but because I moved him from full livery with feed included (half a scoop of nuts and chaff twice a day) to DIY and feeding him myself i'm not sure if its the Equilibra or just that he's now getting a decent feed. He is a big young 16.2 i.d type and his top line and condition has definately improved! I used to use Blue Chip several years ago and had really good results with it, not sure how price compares now though. Have heard good things about Pink powder and may try that next!

We've got all the horses on our yard on the Dengie feed balancer! They all look fantastic, and we've been able to cut out all the other 'extra' supplements.

They don't seem to advertise it, so i know a lot of people haven't heard of it...but i think it's def worth a try :)

HI there i used to feed top spec lite and found it fantastic but have changed to spillers lite as it was cheaper just to see if more cost effective. I found it lasts the same time as the top spec, has the same results & is just that little bit cheaper where we are so I have stuck with it. would def recomend top spec or spillers. I fed blue chip years ago & it was good but very expensive when there are others that are cheaper & do the same.

Thanks everyone, feeding is such a minefield isn’t it!

I had a look and I like the sound of the top spec ones, they seem to do that little bit more than spillers, which would mean I could stop the pink powder, joint powder, and farriers formula, but the way the spillers one are worded that make me feel that I would still need a little more, the pink powder at least.

I do like the sound of blue chip dynamic as it says good for joints which Stan needs and will be undergoing treatment for his back/pelvis so I was wondering if it would support his recovery.

I have a £30 voucher for dangie which is making me sway towards their alfa a balancer but again don’t think it covers all I need it to cover.

The Spillers one (origainal and lite) we feed with there condtioning chaff or cool chaff (both sort of complete type feeds) depends on the horse (i work on a very large yard) and one horse is on Alfa A and original and one very fat one is on lite and happy hoof. no need to add extra stuff most balancers dont need it thats why they are called balancers adding stuff can unbalance them.

Blue chip original gets my vote, have used it on several horses and the results have always been awesome, great weight gain and condition plus much improved coat and feet. Love the fact that it's non heating (currently used on ex-racer) and works even though he's also cereal intolerrant.
