It looks like my mare has uveitis (full diagnosis due on Monday) so I am looking for a sturdy fly mask to turn her out in. I like the look of the Cashel Crusader as it gives plenty of space around the eyes. http://www.cashelcompany.com/Product.aspx?DepartmentID=1&CategoryID=31&ProductID=10254

Has anyone tried this mask? And what are your thought about turning out in a mask? I'm not totally comfortable with it but as she is older (26) I want her to stay out on pasture and moving about as long as possible.

How long do you turn out in one for? She will probably need to be out in one year round so I'm hoping that she doesn't figure out how to get it off (like her rug) or manage to rip it (like her rug....)

The cashel crusader is a good sturdy mask and fits well there quite tough too as ours where them 24x7 in the summer here becasue of the flies, my lad has ears and nose cover on his as hes a pink skinned paint horse and gets bad sunburn and it keeps his face csunburn and fly free.
Premier Equine do a similar one which is just as good i also have a shires which is cheaper and all though a good mask for fit isnt as tough as the others, the horseare ones look nice but didnt suit the shape of my lads head and he kept wiggling out of it

The Cashel one is fabulous. :) Here's my mare in her one, she needs the nose section to stop her pink nose from burning in the summer.

It did come off once when she caught it on a twig on a tree, but apart from that it's stayed on.

Thanks for all the replies! I have gone for the Crusader one as it seems the most robust and it's pretty easy to get hold of in Canada (unlike the Premier, unfortunately) I decided on the basic model without ear or nose cover as Missy is black so no chance of a sunburned nose and I wanted the least fabric possible to do the job to allay my fears of her getting it caught up/ripped/some other ridiculous disaster she as is prone to.
Now all I have to do is cross my fingers and hope that her eye problem is a one-time thing and not moon-blindness.
