Typically J's old girth is too long with his new saddle, ended up with it on the top holes on each side today

I need some recommendations please as have always used Throwogood girths before, but always open to trying something new.

Any ideas?

Just playing devils advocate but if you and your horse are happy and comfortable, what has it got to do with your saddler??

I use thorowgood girths BTW and have not found any problems with them. I have an assortment of sizes for the ridden ones, depending on fitness (or should that be fatness??)

My horse got really sweaty in the Thorogood that he came with got a Jeffries leather one and it's great, nice soft leather and he doesn't seem to be so sweaty?? Looks posh too!!

The saddle company I work for recommends the Wintec elasticated because the elastic is very strong and in the centre of the girth, so the "give" is across the breastbone, making it very even, and it is impossible to overtighten.

However, I prefer leather girths personally, as I find that synthetic girths "draw" the flesh when the horse gets sweaty - ie the area where the girth has sat appears raised when the horse is untacked. I like natural (leather) against natural (horse's skin).

But I agree with the others, if T'good girths are good for you, why change (except for a shorter one!)

something with elastic in the middle is best. (i can't believe anyone still uses girths with elastic at one end, when we're all so hot on everything being as symmetrical as possible! elastic at one end means the saddle can jack-knife on the horse's spine in mid-air over a jump.)
albion and others do padded leather girths with elastic in the middle over the padded bit, but they're quite bulky under the flap. otherwise, i'd say a good old fashioned stubben string girth, bettersaddles has them, and i swear by them. or, kay humphries' girths, which have no elastic but are very comfy and nice, and not expensive at all... PM me if you need the number, can't recall name of shop at the moment.

I recommend either the Wintec one - v good, or for a lux option the Kieffer padded neoprene ones, wash fantastic and mine looks like new after 8 years and they never slip and the horses all love them (I have spread them round the yard!!!)

Agree with that. I found that with my leather girths (both had elastic at one end) it pulled my saddle over to one side, which is why I love the Wintec.

I love my Stubben Cord girth - brilliant for the summer especially as great for airflow. Also good for spreading the pressure out as they're nice and wide. Has been the only girth to help stop slippage on my Welsh Cob (it has no elastic).

Otherwise, for a stud / competition girth - love my Comfort Zone Airflex one. Its lovely and flexible and has elastic through it.

Definitely a soft, thick padded leather girth with double or triple elastic in the centre. The greater and softer the bearing surface, the more comfortable. Imagine yourself with a tight belt around your ribcage. My sensitive girl really likes hers and she moves much more freely with it. Its secure but expands to let her stretch, particularly for jumping. Frank Baines? Albion? Dont know the make of mine - it came off ebay and must be my best buy yet.
