Hi, can anyone recommend a good grass muzzle please? It's for a 12.2 pony, and needs to be suitable to wear for several hours at a time... There seems to be quite a difference in price between the more expensive ones eg. Greenguard, and the cheaper ones - is it worth spending the extra money or are the cheaper ones just as good?
thanks!

(also in NL)

Just got mine from dinky rugs had to get because needed to fit my shetland but bought 2 large ones for horses and am really impressed.

I have just bought one of the comfort ones - was £15.99, she had it on for one day and chewed a small hole in it, by day 3 the hole is big enough for her to eat - god knows what it will be like by tonight - whole bloody bottom missing knowing my luck lol!

I believe The Greenguard grazing mask to be the best. It really fits better when you use one of their head collars as their headcollars have a strap down the nose that helps to support the mask. It takes a bit of fiddling about with to get the perfect fit but once that is done they are great.

Many of the other'bucket' type masks tend to rub the horse's nose terribly & so many people adapt them by cutting bits off or making holes larger or sticking on bits of padding. In my view if you have to do that then it is of poor design to start with.

They are the most expensive but they are really good. My lad will; be going in his in a week or so on fresh pasture & will be wearing it until the autumn. He gets plenty of grass & looks really good on it.

My shetland goes out from 7am to 6pm on a field of very good grass with my TB. He wears a Best Friend Grazing muzzle. If it is the right size, it should not rub at all. He is very happy to wear it and it keeps his weight under control. The grazing hole is about the size of a 50p piece.

It has 4 very strong velcro buckles to attach it to a normal headcollar. It cost about £35 when I bought the last one.

I have had a Shires one for my shetland for years, its never rubbed and he wears it from 6 am till 4pm ( in the winter when he is let loose on 4 acres). they are about £12.
Tried the green guard one for my cob, and he broke it within three hours, I took it back and got my money back, they are not designed for cobs imo. Waste of money

If you use a Greenguard grazing muzzle then please be aware that the headcollar which goes with it does not have a break point in it. Use it with a Fieldsafe headcollar for safety instead, to avoid the risk of your horse getting hung up and getting seriously hurt or worse.

You can always pad out a Shires or Best Friend muzzle with sheepskin around the rim of the muzzle and on the strap which goes over the head to avoid rubbing.

Hi thanks everyone, I've gone with the majority and ordered a Greenguard, so I hope it's worth the money...! Thanks very much for the recommendations!
