The sort you rinse out after shampooing. What do you find works best and has a good lasting effect without causing irritation?

After spending a fortune on different ones, I now just wipe through some baby oil after washing. Doesn't wind up greasy and stays nice and soft and tangle free. Mare is super sensitive and hasn't had an adverse reaction to the fragrance, so all is good!
If you want to rinse out then I would just use regular human conditioner - comes up a treat if you can be bothered with all the extra rinsing!

Tesco value furniture polish! swear by the stuff! Either spray it straight on and brush through, or if your Horse is a bit worried by the noise, spray onto a brush then brush through. Keeps my Horses mane and tail silky and shiny. It is under £1 to buy, so even if you don't like it, you haven't really lost anything and you can take it home to use instead :p

i use carr and day martin - spray on after rinsing shampoo. I usually then leave to dry and tail is really easily brushed through. Have previously washed with shampoo, rinsed, sprayed, hacked then brushed out, simplez

I go to costco and buy those huge bottles of TreSemme shampoo and conditioner. It works perfectly and much cheaper than the horse shampoo products. I used to buy every known horse product under the sun and it wasn't any different to the human stuff and didn't do any better job. The only product I still use is Megatek conditioner to help hair regrowth, I use on any rubbed out patches on the body and also leave in on the mane and tail.

cowboy magic concentrated stuff, pricey but you don't need much to get through even mine's thick tail. Its the only stuff that means I don't HAVE to wash it first. Its a 5 min job if I use it, 20 min plus if I use anything else.

carr and day martin and lynn russell stuff no good for us!

Megatek for growth - I just rub in the roots and leave but I do mix it 50 - 50 with water.

The best detangler on the market is Survivor - leaves the hair in beautiful condition and even a huge gypsy cob tail soons combs out with it.

Both are made by Equss and can be bought from tailgator.co.uk though I have seen it on some trade stands at larger shows too.

I recently bought Mark Todd 'Competition Spray' at a local tack shop as Canter Coat by CD&M was over £10 a bottle!
I remember it being much cheaper :o

Seems to battle through Meg's tail quite well, which is a monster in itself at times! :)

If like me you really value long healthy hair - I have a gypsy cob, then take a close look at what goes into the product.

I avoid horse products with silicon in, and the chemicals that go into furniture polish make it suitable for my table, not my horse.

However, if I was doing the odd show and wanted a quick shine then yes I might consider it on a tail, but never on the body or as a regular product. Would you use it on your own hair? I only use things on my horses that I would on myself for grooming and washing.

Supermarket own-brand - the sort you get for about 60p a litre. Obviously needs washing out but seems very mild. A hairdresser once told me that the cheaper a shampoo/conditioner, the milder it is. So I use Asda Smart Price or Morrisons shampoo and conditioner and they have worked well on everything from TBs to gipsy cobs

I have ASDA stuff as it's even cheaper :p Great stuff :)

That's a very good point - I wouldn't even consider spraying furniture polish on my head, however much to the amusement of those passing by :D

Well, I get it all over my hands and nothing bad has happened yet! I personally wouldn't eat or use most of the things my horse gets. Bonkers idea!

I have a traditional stallion with a big long mane to keep it in tip top condition I use human alberto balsam conditioner ( usually sun kissed raspberry cause it's pink !) nd then spray in supreme products moisturise and condition it's brilliant !! X

I use tresomme after washing only on tails as you would never be able to plait a mane after .
And cowboy magic when tail is dry.

Gosh, thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I've got Cowboy Magic here at home - I use it on my own long tangley hair and on the kids!!! They love the smell. I've also got Canter Mane and Tail conditioner in the spray bottle and use that between washes. I've been using it since the early 80's and must admit, it's certainly gone up in price. It used to be fairly cheap and cheerful. In Mole Avon today it was £12 for a large bottle. Yikes. I haven't tried the Tesco furniture polish before but do have a tin kicking about under the kitchen sink somewhere (it rarely sees the light of day around here LOL :D) Maybe I'll give it a try when the Canter stuff's all used up!

I'll try some Treseme conditioner I think. Saw that Tesco has it on special offer ATM: £2.00 for a giant bottle. Worth a try for when I actually wash her tail.

Thanks for the recommendations for Megatek. Never heard of it but her Rhino Combo rug has completely rubbed away a 10 inch section of her mane. She's got nothing left but short fluffy bits sticking up half way along her neck ATM. Definitely got to put something on there to encourage regrowth. Didn't fancy Cornucrescine on there. Yuk. She'd end up looking worse than she already does. I'll look the Megatek up!

am also looking into megatek - what is the active ingredient that promotes growth

Keratin

Ive used it on my own hair with great results ,ive been on medication which thins and can cause hair to fall out, and my hair feels lovely and thick and has actually grown more than usual (according to my hairdresser). I would definitely recommend it!

Mega-Tek contains: deionized water, hydrolyzed keratin protein, stearalkonium chloride, glyceryl stearate, peg 100 stearate, marine protein, peg 40, panthenal, dimethicone copolyol, magnesium citrate, allantoin, amino acids, methylparaben, mucopoly-saccharides, propylparaben, imidazolidinyl urea, fragrance.

On 4th reading - i see the word "keratin" :o

Ooohhh i keep meaning to try the polish idea! I been using pig oil mixed with water in an old sprayer. Works gr8 but make sure u shake before using as it obviously settles.

I use pig oil slavered onto her lower legs and tail when it's really muddy in winter. It's fabulous for keeping the mud off, it just slides off or if it does stay it doesn't stick and is really easy to brush off. I know some horses can be allergic to pig oil, but luckily my mega sensitive beastie isn't and I find it invaluable for keeping her clean. Mind you, the last two winters have been so dry and/or freezing cold here that we haven't had any mud to worry about. None of the 40+ horses have had mud fever either. In previous years that was a real nuisance. No mud = no mud fever! :)
